A Credible Deterrent to Pollution and Greater Compliance with the Law 10. Effective Management The organizational structure of the EPA reflects, to a great extent, the goals presented above. At the head of the organization is the chief Adminis trator and a Deputy Administrator. Assistant Adminis trators are responsible for twelve subdivisions of the EPA's overall program, some dealing with the administrative and legal aspects of the agency's work and others dealing with environmental and ecological issues. A list of the current EPA divisions headed by Assistant Administrators follows: Administration and Resource Management Air and Radiation Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Office of the Chief Financial Officer Office of the General Counsel Office of the Inspector General International Activities Environmental Information Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances Research and Development Solid Waste and Emergency Response Water There are ten EPA Regional Office in the United States. Each Regional Office is responsible for the execution of the Agency's programs within the states in its domain: Region 1 covers Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont and is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. Region 2 covers New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and is headquartered in New York City. Region 3, headquartered in Philadelphia, covers Washington DC, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Region 4 covers Ala bama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee and is headquartered in Atlanta. Region 5, with its city office in Chicago, covers Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Headquartered in Dallas, Region 6 covers Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Region 7, which co vers Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, is headquartered in Kansas City, Kansas. Region 8 , headquartered in Denver, covers Colorado, Montana, North and South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. The San Francisco city office of Region 9 covers Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada. Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington which comprise Region 10 are admi nistered from the city office in Seattle, Washington. The EPA also maintains numerous research facilities and laboratories: The National Air and Ra diation Environmental Laboratory (NAREL) based in Montgomery, Alabama; The National Environmental Investigations Center Laboratory located in Denver, Colorado; The National Management Risk Laboratory (NRMRL) located in Cincinnati, Ohio. The National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) has three facilities. The Ecosystems Research Division is based in Athens, Georgia and the Environmental Sciences Division is based in Las Vegas, Nevada. A third research facility which deals with this issue is located in Research Triangle Park, South Carolina. There are also three facilities housing the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL): the Mid-Continent Division located in Duluth, Minnesota; the Western Ecology Division located in Corvallis, Oregon; and an ad ditional laboratory complex located in Gulf Breeze, Florida. The EPA is also involved in a complex and diverse assortment of General Interest Programs. Among these are the Consumer Labelling Initiative, Community-Based Environmental Programs, Counter Terrorism and the EPA, Economy and the Environ ment, Green Communities, Lead Programs, Sunwise School Programs and a plethora of other programs and activities.
