ECO NEWSLETTER A WORD ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY by Martha T. Pelensky, P.E. UNWLA Chair for Ecology/Environment Dear Friends, It would be appropriate for all of us to become more familiar with the existence and functioning of the main government body responsible for the cleanliness of our environment — the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The agency's 2000-2001 budget is $7.26 billion dollars; it presently employs approximately 18,000 people who work to protect us from the harmful and dangerous side-effects of our man-made industrial and post-industrial lifestyle. There are innumerable laws, ordinances and amendments governing the EPA's activities. Among the most important of these are the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, the Clean Water Act, the DDT Ban, Ozone Protection/Montreal Protocol, and the Safe Drinking Water Act. The function and mandate of the organization is oversight and enforcement of these and other laws throughout the land. Specific EPA activities will be addressed in greater detail and depth in future issues of Our Life. The stated mission of the EPA "is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environ ment — air, water, and land — upon which life depends." This general principal has been expanded into the Strategic Plan of the EPA and covers the following ten goals: 1. Clean Air 2. Clean and Safe Water “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ-СЕРПЕНЬ 2000 11
