Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America Vol. LVII JULY-AUGUST 2000 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT July 4th and August 24th are two very important dates for the United States of America and Ukraine, for they were turning points in the histories of these two nations. On July 4, 1776, America proclaimed its independ ence from England and democracy was bom on a new continent. The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America read as follows: "When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of earth, the separate and equal station which the Laws of Nature and Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel to the separation." Since that day, thousands of people have people have come to these shores every day to find a new life in this wonderful nation of the free and the brave, seeking life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Among these thousands were Ukrainians, including the dynamic women who founded the UNWLA and gave it a firm grounding that has kept our organization going through hard times and good for seventy-five years. In this 75th year of our existence, we too have a lot to be thankful for, beginning with the fact that this nation became a home for us and our organization. Ukraine proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991. It too felt the need to dissolve political bonds. The event was the most wonderful and happiest day for every Ukrainian living on this earth. This year we will be celebrating Ukraine's 9th year of independence. Ukrainian has accomplished much during these nine years of independence, especially on the international level. Among these successes was Ukraine's election to the Security Council of the United Nations and Henady Udovenko's election as first Ukrainian President of the United Nations' 42nd General Assembly. For this and much more we can be thankful and proud. As an independent nation, Ukraine has achieved much, but the new nation still needs our help in many ways. One of the ways we as Ukrainian American women can help is to encourage our elected officials in the United States to learn more about Ukraine and to recognize the benefits of assisting Ukraine to become a strong and vital member of the world community of independent democratic nations. If Ukraine is to succeed, it must have international assistance and cooperation, especially from the United States of America which remains the world's brightest symbol of true democracy. For this reason, as elections in this country are nearing, it behooves all of us to ask our candidates where they stand on Ukraine. In participating in this country's elections as informed citizens, we have the power to make a difference, not only in our own lives but in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. Happy Birthday America. Happy Birthday Ukraine. May both nations prosper in peace and harmony. God bless America. God bless Ukraine.
