Fun Crafts fo r Children by NATALIA K. BILASH BUBBLE PRINTS Making note cards and stationery. Plan ahead — these make nice gifts from children. You will need: • 1/2 cup bubble solution • small plastic bowl • 2 tablespoons tempera paint • a straw • white typing paper cut in halves or quarters Pour the bubble solution into the bowl. Whisk in the tempera paint. Use the straw to blow into the bubble solution and make a heap of bubbles. Lay a piece of paper gently over the bubbles. The paper will absorb the paint and make a print of your bubbles. GREEN PENNIES Do this project before your child goes to sleep. He or she will wake up to a great surprise! You will need: • Paper towel • Bowl • Vinegar • Pennies Fold paper towel into a square and lay in bowl. Pour enough vinegar into the paper towel to saturate it. Lay pennies on wet paper towel. Overnight, as the copper in the pennies reacts with the vinegar, the underside of the pennies has grown a bright green coating. GLITTER PLAYDOUGH This recipe is much better than the store bought vari ety You will need: • 3 cups flour • 1-1/2 cups salt • 6 teaspoons cream of tartar • 3 cups water • 3-4 tablespoons oil • icing food color glitter Mix the dry ingredients (except for the glitter) in a large pan. Add water, oil, and food color and whisk until the lumps are gone and the food coloring is mixed in well. Place the mixture over medium heat and stir until the dough becomes thick and can be gathered into a big ball. When the dough cools, knead in the glitter. Glitter dough will keep for several weeks in a plastic bag or covered bowl. JELLY FISH BOWL An amusing party favor. You will need: • 1 large box blue gelatin • 2 cups hot water • 1 cup cold water • 1 cup ice cubes • 6 clear plastic cups • gummy fish Pour the gelatin into a bowl that has a pouring spout and add hot water. Stir until dissolved. Add the cold water and ice and stir until gelatin thickens. Remove any ice that hasn't melted. Pour gelatin into cups and place gummy fish in the cups. If the gelatin is too thin to suspend fish, ref rigerate for 15 minutes or more to thicken. A squirt of whipping cream creates a wave effect.
