As much as our children complained because their American friends were home on Saturdays watching cartoons, they later looked forward to meeting their "Ukie" friends at "Ukie" Saturday school. And of course they learned English! We were and are good parents -- our children's brains were nourished and nurtured. Many of our children excelled and went on to earn high degrees in many and varied professions. Some even speak more than two languages. A third benefit is that your child or grandchild will have developed the potential for continuing Ukrainian society in the diaspora, feel a valued member of a large community and perhaps even contribute in some ways to Ukraine's future. Many American or Canadian bom Ukrainians who are fluent in the English language, start On Sunday, November 15, 1998, UNWLA Branch 30 of Yonkers held its annual art exhibit and bazaar in St. Michael the Archangel's Ukrainian Catholic Church Hall. Each year Branch 30 invites several Ukrainian Artists to participate in this event. This year, selected woodcuts and etchings of the late Jacques Hnizdowsky, the paintings of Slava Hnatiw, and paintings and ceramics from the Chryzanta Gallery were exhibited. businesses or volunteer in some way to help with the development of a modem democratic Ukraine. And even if they don't, they'll have memories for a lifetime. Who knows what interests, hobbies, or intellectual pursuits are decided on because of wonderful experiences in childhood. Sending your child or grandchild to a Ukrainian preschool can only reap many, many benefits. Fostering learning of any kind is never easy. Without a doubt, some children need more encouragement than others, but it's all worth it in the end. Check the newspapers or radio broadcasts in your city or town, or better still, contact your local UNWLA Branch and think seriously about enrolling your child in a Ukrainian preschool. Patriotism is not the only issue or the most important issue; it's also intellectual and emotional brain power. In addition to hosting this art exhibit, Branch 30 sold baked goods, Ukrainian Christmas cards, notecards, cookbooks and honey which was donated by one of its members, Roxolana Podpirka. Handmade Christmas ornaments by Halyna Slabodukh were very popular. In previous years, Branch 30 has exhibited works by Christina Holowchak-Debarry, Wolodymyra Wascicko, and Slava Gerulak.
