TWO UNWLA CONTAINERS WITH HUMANITARIAN AID ARRIVE IN UZHHOROD, TRANSCARPATHIAN UKRAINE New York Regional Social Welfare Chair Oksana Lopatynsky, Social Welfare Treasurer Anna Rak, and National Social Welfare Chair Lidia Czerny with some of the packages that were sent to Zakarpattia. UNWLA Social Welfare Chair Lidia Czemyk and her Social Welfare Committee sprang into action as soon as the news of severe flooding in Transcarpathian Ukraine reached the USA on November 5, 1998. Contact was immediately made with Atena Pashko, president of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, and Dr. Oksana Hanych, president of Soyuz Ukrainok for the Transcarpathian region (oblast) of Ukraine. The severe flooding destroyed 119 villages and left over 400,000 people homeless. The full extent of the damage will not be known till the spring, when the snow has melted. The government and people of Ukraine came together as never before with assistance for the victims of this tragedy. So did our UNWLA membership. Upon learning of the dire need for medicine for the flood victims, $5,000.00 was immediately sent on November 7, 1998, followed by an additional $5,000.00 soon after. Together with the National Executive Committee, a decision was made to send urgently needed children's clothing, household goods and other necessities to Soyuz Ukrainok in Uzhhorod through Meest. In circulars to all UNWLA members, an appeal was made and in less than three weeks the first container, loaded with 600 packages of goods, left for Uzhhorod. A second container, with another 600 packages, left on January 25, 1999 and arrived in Uzhhorod in mid February 15, 1999. We thank Consul General of Ukraine in New York, Jurij Bohajevsky, for his invaluable assistance with the formal arrangements for the shipments. We are also very grateful to the Self Reliance Federal Credit Union of New York for the donation of $5,000.00 which funded the shipment of the first container. Special gratitude goes to Ksenia Piasecki of the Ukrainian Broadcasting Network (UBN) on Radio Station 1430 AM at 8 a.m. (Ranok z Namy) for her interview with Lidia Czemyk and Dr. Oksana Hanych. The cooperation of the UNWLA Regional Councils, Branches, members and other individuals who supported our appeal made it possible for the UNWLA to act swiftly and generously. As of January 31, 1999, the UNWLA Welfare Fund has spent $25,614.63 to cover the costs of humanitarian aid to Transcarpathian Ukraine and intensive plans are being made for further distribution. The donation lists pouring in from UNWLA “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 1999 17
