Uzhhorod. At the Health Center "Kvitka Polonyny" with children sponsored by the UNWLA. Dr. Oksana Hanych (secondfrom left), Anna Krawczuk, Lidia Czernyk. Third row from left: Director Dr. Molnar and Anna Rak. NEWS FROM UNWLA HEADQUARTERS H U M A N IT A R IA N A ID TO ZA K A R P A TS K A OBLAST (REQION) IN U K R A IN E The devastation of the flooding in November of 1998, followed by mud slides and a severe winter, is still not fully evaluated. From the information that we have received, 119 villages were wiped out, thousands of people were left homeless, some lost their lives. The government of Ukraine sent immediate aid to the region, as did the International Red Cross and many countries. UNWLA Social Welfare Chair, Lidia Czemyk, took immediate action and contacted Soyuz Ukrainok in Kyiv and president of Soyuz Ukrainok for the Zakarpatska oblast president, Dr. Oksana Hanych. Funds were immediately sent from the UNWLA Welfare Fund to purchase medicines,, children's clothing, and staples. An appeal was made to UNWLA members who responded by gathering goods to fill 1200 packages — enough for two containers - that were shipped in January to Soyuz Ukrainok in Uzhhorod, Zakarpatska oblast. Fund raising appeals mailed to UNWLA branches brought in $104,715.00 by the end of April 1999. We thank all our members for their cooperation and all of our benefactors for their contributions and support. The funds collected were allocated as follows: Shipment of two containers (1200) packages, cost of deliveries and purchase of needed goods -- $20,625.00, Purchase of medicine and staples -- $13,120.00, Housing for one month of 213 orphaned and ill children in Health Centers (Sanatorium) in Zakarpatska oblast — $20,930.00, Cash distributed to 117 families who lost everything in the six most effected flood zones - $40,950 (Total $95,625.00). Approximate value of donated goods $ 15,500.00 120 packages sent directly by UNWLA Branches and Regional Councils to Uzhhorod $4,800.00 Total aid as of April 30,1999 $115,925.00 16 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 1999 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
