CllltDREfTS UKRflinini) AUDIO CASSETTES Some Personal Favorites: A Review by NATALIA BILASH Growing up, I remember singing many Ukrainian songs with my parents and friends. Most of the songs I learned from my parents or at Ukrainian Svitlychka or Hunter's Shkilka (run by M.M. Sonevytsky) or in Plast. In later years, the songs I learned were from audio cassettes. Today, as a mother of two young girls, aged three and five, I've re-learned many of those songs. This is not hard to do, because many great children's cassettes are avialable in today's market. Of the many cassettes I own, the ones I like best are both entertaining and well produced. A brief critique follows. I've rated the cassettes from excellent to good, using a five star designation for excellent, four stars for very good, and three for good. All of the cassettes mentioned come with printed lyrics and are available at Ukrainian stores in the US or Canada. MIRKA & OLYA: DOBRYDEN (Good Day), performed by Mirka Boyechko and Olya Cholkan, is produced by Darka & Slavko: Music Manufacturing Services in Toronto. This is a great cassette for children of all ages. All the words are legible and the songs are sung in a happy and upbeat fashion. My children listened two or three times and were able to pick up all of the words. Now all I have to do is pop it into my recorder and they just sing along. Songs include Tsarvina (the Princess), Kotyku, Kotyku (Kitten), Abetka (Alphabet) and others. ***** V TABORI LUNA YE SPIV (Camp Songs) is performed by the seniorky in Plast Stanytsia Passaic. The cassette is recorded and produced by AC Productions. A fairly new cassette, this one includes Plast songs that are enjoyable for children and adults. The words are legibly sung and easy to follow. Among the songs on this cassette are Veseliy Mandrivnyk (The Merry Hiker), Krai Lisu na Poliantsi (Near the Meadow), Volya (Freedom), and Sirily u Sumerku (Dusk Came).***** ULIUBLENI VIRSHI (Favorite Poems) is produced by A-BA-BA-HA-LA-MA-HA, Ivan Malkovych in Kyiv. The cassette contains songs and poems sung and read by various artists in Ukraine, among them, Malkovych's young son Ivasyk. Many of the melodies are from popular Ukrainian and American songs, so the words are easily learned. After listening to 20 this cassette, my children can recite poems from memory. Few of the songs and poems are known to children here in the US and Canada, but they are easy to learn. The cassette may be purchased with a large print, very nicely illustrated book by the same name). ***** BARABOLYA & TSYBOOLYA (That Means Potato & That Means Onion), on two cassettes, is produced by Ron Cahute in Ontario. The lyrics are written and sung by Ron Cahute and Ihor Baczynky. The songs are hilarious and enjoyable for children and adults. Sung in two languages (Ukrainian and English) to popular American tunes, the song are catchy and enticing. In this respect, they are a clever teaching tool, inviting the child who speak no Ukrainian to learn and use Ukrainian words in a non-threatening and entertaining way. Songs include Count To Ten, Days of the Week, Slawko the Music Man, and Nice Peryna (Nice Down Quilt). ***** UKRAINSKI NARODNI KAZKY (Ukrainian Stories) is performed by Yuriy Yatsenko of Studio Ukraine in Ukraine. The stories are read by various people. Though fairly new to the Ukrainian-American child, they are easily understood and pleasant. Included in this cassette are Khlib і Zoloto (Bread and Gold), Kazka pro Kotyka і Pivnyka (A Story About a Cat and a Rooster), and Yizhak ta Zayets (The Porcupine and the Hare) .**** SPIVUCHI SKARBY (Sing Along Treasures), with music by Gene Zwozdesky (CAPAC) from Kazka Productions, Ltd. is a collection of Ukrainian rhymes, songs and verses in Ukrainian on one side and in English on the other. A book which corresponds to the cassette and is nicely illustrated with children's drawings, comes with the cassette. Songs include Liubliu Spivaty (I Like to Sing), Na Mnohi Lita (Happy Birthday), Halloween, and Sviatyi Mykolai (Saint Nicholas). **** LEVKO DURKO, performed by comic and singer Levko Durko of Ukraine is funny and upbeat. All of the songs and dialogue are new to the Ukrainian- American child, but are easy to follow and sing along with. Songs include Zoopark (The Zoo), Kukurudza v Buzi (Eating Corn), and Babtsia (Grandmom).
