A Saturday luncheon program was provided by UNWLA pre-school children who delighted eveiyone with their songs and poetry recitals. During the luncheon honorary citations and gold UNWLA pins were presented by President Anna Krawczuk and Vice President Sophia Hewryk to UNWLA members who have been in the organization for 50 years. The highlight of the convention was the banquet, which was held on Saturday evening. The Chicago community attended in full force, showing its appreciation and support for the work of the UNWLA’s Chicago Regional Council and its branches. Opening remarks were given by Olena Semianczuk-Matwyshyn, the Convention Chair. Anna Krawczuk, the outgoing president of the UNWLA, gave her farewell address. She was then granted the title of Honorary President of the UNWLA by the four Vice Presidents. The citation was read by first Vice President Olga Tiytyak. As Honorary President, Mrs. Krawczuk then installed the newly elected officers of the UNWLA Board. Newly elected UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj spoke next, discussing on the various programs for the future and stressing her wish to pass on to the younger generation of women what the UNWLA had given her — the ability to work for the good of women of Ukraine and the United States in the spheres of their interests, primarily in our organization, in our membership. "We must," she said, "interest women with our future, our heritage, and encourage them to join our ranks." Mistress of Ceremonies Daria Markus read selected greetings from well wishers, among them Ukraine’s President Leonid Kuchma and President of Soyuz Ukrainok Ukrainy Atena Pashko, who for personal reasons was unable to attend the convention. Oral greetings were presented by the following: Nina Kowalska, Ukraine's Ambassador to Switzerland; Ludmyla Protasova, Acting Consul General of Ukraine in Chicago; Oksana Sokolyk, President of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations; and Sorosh Roshan, President of the National Council of Women of USA. An installation of various honorary awards took place during the banquet which ended with a musical program by Natalia Khoma, Marta Bagratuni and Sharon Rogers. The Most Reverend Bishop Michael, CSsR, led the opening prayer and the Most Reverend Archbishop Vsevolod led the closing prayer. The Sunday session started with a mass at 7:00 a.m., celebrated by the Most Reverend Bishop Michael CSsR. After breakfast, there was a very interesting sightseeing trip through the city of Chicago, including the Ukrainian Village, its museums and churches. The remainder of the day was taken up by the various seminars, as follows: Organizational - chaired by Sophia Hewryk; Cultural - chaired by Marta Bohachevsky-Chomiak; Finances - chaired by Nadia Cwiach and Taissa Turiansky; Social Welfare - chaired by Lidia Czemyk; Educational and Ecology - chaired by Sophia Hewryk and Olga Trytyak; Museum - chaired by Maria Pazuniak; Scholarships - chaired by Luba Bilowchtchuk; and press and "Our Life" - chaired by Jaroslawa Rubel and Irena Chaban. The Sunday luncheon was dedicated to the reports on the various seminars and was followed by resolutions and recommendations. During the farewell luncheon, generous donations from UNWLA members were made toward the purchase of a new computer for "Our Life": Anna Maksymowycz — $1,000.00, Lidia Ficalowuch — $1,000.00, Maria Nawarynska — $250.00, Lidia Kolodchin — $200.00, Wolodymyra Tesluk — $100.00, Lesia Goy — $100.00. An additional $500.00 for this purpose was pledged by UNWLA Branch 56. In the afternoon session, Honorary President Anna Krawczuk gave her farewell remarks. The acceptance speech of President Elect Iryna Kurowyckyj .followed. The newly elected president said that with entering the new millennium , the UNWLA would be celebrating its 75th anniversary. She expressed a hope that the new technologies in communication will make it possible for us to attract new membership which otherwise would never have had contact with our organization and her belief that the Internet would give the organization a great opportunity to continue and enlarge the work of the UNWLA. She thanked the Nominating Committee and its Chair, Maria Rakowsky, for their work in preparing the new slate. She also thanked Honorary President Anna Krawczuk for her great work during her tenure as president. Ms. Kurowyckyj also thanked the Convention Committee, chaired by Olena Semianczuk-Matwyshyn, and the Chicago Regional Council and its president, Lubomyra Kalin, for their work which resulted in a convention which ran very smoothly and which was conducted in a friendly atmosphere. The new president also thanked Convention Chair Daria Jarosewych for her sometimes difficult job during the convention.
