Dr. Julian Kulas, Ambassador Nina Kovalska, Stephen Mix, Esq., Iryna Kurowyckyj and Dr. Zoreslava Shkiryak-Nyzhnyk. first woman ambassador of Ukraine to Switzerland who spoke on the topic "Human Rights Are Women's Rights". She mentioned U.N. documents that protect human rights, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Human Rights Convention, and others. She also discussed the problem of trafficking of Ukrainian women around the world. Dr. Zoreslava-Nyzhnyk from Ukraine addressed the issue of "Health: One of the Fundamental Human Rights". She described the health situation of women in Ukraine in great detail, painting a very sad picture. She said that one of the fundamental human rights is the right to health which Ukrainian women at this time do not have because of the economic situation in the county. Stephen B. Nix, Esquire, who served as outside counsel to the committee of the Ukrainian Parliament and assisted with the drafting of the Constitution of Ukraine, the law on the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and the drafting of the Law on Parliamentary Elections in Ukraine, spoke about “Human Rights Pursuant to the Ukrainian Constitution.” Dr. Julian Kulas spoke on "Promoting and Defending Human Rights of American Citizens." Saturday, May 29, 1999, marked the official opening of the XXVth Convention and began with the presentation of banners of the nine Regional Councils and a prayer recited by Luba Bilowchtchuk, Chair of the Scholarship Program. President Anna Krawczuk officially opened the convention. After the report of the Credentials Committee verifying the quorum, Daria Jarosewych (from Chicago) was elected Chair of the Convention. The morning and afternoon session of the first full day of the convention addressed various organizational and financial issues and included a presentation by Oksana Xenos, Esq., on "Why the UNWLA Must Adhere to the IRS Laws". An address by President Anna Krawczuk was followed by the report of the Nominating Committee Chair, Maria Rakowsky.
