Volodymyr the Great. Citations were given to six UNWLA members whose countless volunteer hours, foresight, determination and understanding contributed to this unique and largest student scholarship program in the diaspora: Anna Krawczuk, Maria Chymynec, Teodozia Sawycka, Sophia Andrushkiw, Vera Mycio and Luba Bilowchtchuk (UNWLA Scholarship Program Chair). At the banquet, Ms. Bilowchtchuk expressed her gratitude to the World Congress of Ukrainians for such high recognition. Our sincere thanks to WFUWO president Oksana Sokolyk for the recommendation. December 18, 1998. Washington, DC. At the invitation of Anton Buteiko, Ukraine's new Ambassador to the United States, a meeting was held at the Embassy of Ukraine. In his welcoming speech, Ambassador Buteiko welcomed the leaders of the Ukrainian American community and expressed his willingness to work with them. The UNWLA was represented by President Anna Krawczuk. In her welcoming speech, she emphasized the concerns of the UNWLA: health and welfare of children, victims of Chomobyl, the flooding in Transcarpathian Ukraine, and trafficking in women. Mrs. Krawczuk asked the Ambassador what steps are being taken in Ukraine to enforce the law and curtail the sex industry. Among other community representatives were UNA President Ulana Diachuk, Vice President of the WFUWO for the USA Natalia Danylenko, UCCA and UWC President Askold Lozynskyj, and UACC President Ihor Gawdiak. January 11, 1999. Irvington, NJ. The UNWLA Regional Council of New Jersey held its holiday meeting at the Ukrainian National Home. Regional Council President Maria Polanskyj welcomed guests and extended best wishes for the coming year. Olena Melnychuk recited Ukrainian Christmas and New Year's wishes (vinchuvannia). In this festive mood, UNWLA President Anna Krawczuk presented Sophia Andrushkiw with a citation from the World Congress of Ukrainians. Mrs. Andrushkiw was one of the recipients of the UNWLA Scholarship Program award which had been presented during the 7th Ukrainian World Congress. In an informal speech, Mrs. Krawczuk expressed gratitude to Mrs. Andrushkiw, a member of UNWLA Branch 28, for her foresight in assisting Ukrainian students in Poland. Now, more than 30 years later, the success stories of the program are surfacing in historical books written by former scholarship recipients, like Bohdan Huk's 1947. She also shared her memories of a 1989 trip to Poland with the late Vera Mycio, whose name is also on the citation. Also attending was UNWLA VP Olha Trytyak, Honorary President of the UNWLA New Jersey Regional Council. The warm and friendly atmosphere was felt long after the meeting ended.
