October 30 to November 1, 1998. Toronto, Canada. Annual meeting of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations with President Oksana Sokolyk presiding. Besides reports of member organization presidents, plans presented by various Committee Chairs were approved. UNWLA VP Olha Trytyak presented Ms. Sokolyk with the "Nature and Us" book, WFUWO VP Natalia Danylenko informed those present that she and her husband Ivan Danylenko had funded a room, to be used as a women's library, at the Mohyla Academy in Kyiv. Mrs. Danylenko appealed to all WFUWO members to send their publications, past and present, to the Academy. One of the big events of the meeting, was the acceptance of the Ukrainian Women's Organization from Prague, Czech Republic, into the fold of the WFUWO. Honorary Member of the WFUWO and the UNWLA Mary V. Beck was the keynote speaker. Honorary guest was Irena Senyk of Ukraine. Upon recommendation of the WFUWO, Irena Senyk was chosen one of the 100 heroines of the world by an American women's organization in Rochester, NY, where she personally received the award. Her speech at the banquet focused on the suffering of dissidents in Ukraine including her own 34 year incarceration under the Soviet regime. November 3, 1998. New York, NY.
