ARE YOU REALLY ILL? by IHOR MAGUN, M.D. There are many times we do not feel well and cannot identify one specific problem. Then there are times we have a recurring problem and we assume something more serious is occurring. Or is it? Are we imagining a problem? Or are we deal ing with hypochondria? Hypochondria is a morbid concern about one’s own health and exaggerated attention to any unusual bodily or mental sensations. It is a false belief that one is suffering from some disease. It has many causes and can manifest itself in various ways. Many of us are emotionally affected by external circumstances. If, for example, a close friend or relative suffers a massive heart attack that came out of nowhere, we may begin to pay particular attention to every slight chest discomfort, assu ming that it may also be a heart attack. Is the pain actually meant to be taken seriously? While we should pay close attention to how we feel and to physical changes that we perceive, it is important to recognize that not all pains signal a serious illness. If we are more concerned about the belief of illness rather than the discomfort from symp toms, it is probably insignificant. In this particular situation, we are proabably paying closer attention to a particular discomfort than we did before hea ring about someone having a heart attack. This is a perfectly normal reaction. What becomes an imperfect reaction is to dwell on the idea. People who complain of continuing pain sometimes seek out medical attention in the belief that a disease is actually present for which diagnosis and treatment are necessary. These individuals are almost almost always making a subconscious attempt to avoid certain activities in their lives or to obtain financial or emotional support from someone. They have usually already undergone multiple extensive medical workups with no noted improvement. In fact, many of these people do not have any specific symptoms that are annoying or painful. The bottom line is this. We should be aware of our bodies and pay close attention to changes that occur. We should also recognize that some of these changes maty be due to the normal aging process or because we are temporarilry under some additional stress. We should maintain a good balance between work, rest, exercise and good eating habits. If things are not right despite proper attention to all of these good habits, seek a medical evaluation. Be aware that physicians, despite all of the available cutting-edge technology, cannot always find the answer to all ailments. But working with a good physician can probably eliminate most of our concerns and fears, real or imagined. GUACAMOLE 4 large ripe avocados 1 small onion 2 large garlic cloves 3 tablespoons lemon juice Salt and pepper corner Mash avocado with fork. Stir in other ingredients.
