UNWLA New Jersey Regional Council Hosts Presentation and Discussion on U.S. Immigration Law by BOZHENA OLSHANIWSKY Left to right: Bohdanna Pochoday, Andriy Michniak Maria Polanskyj, Mykhaylo Hrycak Bozhena Olshaniwsky and Borys Lewycky. On March 27, 1998, the New Jersey Regional Council of the UNWLA, hosted a presentation and discussion on U.S. Immigratiion Law. Held at St. John Ukrainian Church Hall in Newark, New Jersey, the program began with a prayer by church pastor Rev. Frank Shaydiak and brief opening remarks by Council President Maria Polanskyj. Bozhena Olshaniwsky, N.J. Regional Council, Public Relations Officer, officiated as emcee. The guest speakers were four Ukrainian- American attorneys who spoke on the subject of US immigration laws and problems encountered by those seeking permanent residence and naturalization in the US. Attorneys Andriy Michniak, Mykhaylo Hrycak, Bohdanna Pochoday and Borys Lewycky focused on important things that immigrants interested in remaining in the US and in becoming US citizens through naturalization should know. All four attorneys stressed the importance of good legal representation and advised that crooks and charlatans offering a "quick fix" should be avoided. The attorneys also emphasized the need for preparation and for compliance with US immigration policies and regulations. "Know your own case thoroughly, collect all necessary information and documents, follow the immigration law and adhere to deadlines." The program was well attended with many of the more than 130 members of the audience representing the "fourth wave" constituency of immigrants from Ukraine. The Ukrainian-American press was represented by Teofil Staruch of Voice of America, Lev Khmelkowsky of America and Roma Hadzewycz of The Ukrainian Weekly. A lively discussion period followed the formal presentation and many guests lingered over refreshments to discuss the immigration issue with the attorneys.
