dent of the UNWLA) had bid farewell to Mrs. Udo- venko when her husband’s tour of duty as Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UN had ended. She indicated that it was appropriate that Mrs. Udovenko be wel comed back to New York by the current UNWLA president, Anna Krawczuk. It is a great honor for Ukraine to have H. Udo venko preside at the United Nations, because the next such opportunity will not be in 125 years. At the podium, Dina Udovenko spoke of her humble beginnings and of her life as the wife of a diplomat who has served his country as Ambassa dor, Secretary of State and now as president of the 52nd UN Assembly. She recalled her student years in Kyiv where she and her husband studied and met, fell in love and married. She spoke of a life centered around her husband’s carrer, of her role of supporter in fulfilling the duties of a diplomat’s wife, and also of a life filled with opportunities to meet and under stand people of different nationalities. A question and answer period were followed by refreshments at a friendly and informal reception where guests were given the opportunity to speak with Mrs. Udovenko privately and take photographs. The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Inc., is grateful to Dina Udovenko for accepting our invitation and for taking all of us into a different world — that of global diplomacy. NEWS FROM UNWLA HEADQUARTERS October 19, 1997. New Haven, CT. The UNWLA New England Regional Council celebrated its silver anniversaiy. Vice-President Olha Trytyak represented the UNWLA Executive Committe at the festivities. October 21-27, 1997. Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations held its 7th Congress, reelecting Oksana Sokolyk as President. The WFUWO, which holds its Congresses every five years, is an umbrella organization that unites 23 Ukrainian women's organizations in the diaspora. Headed by President Anna Krawczuk, the UNWLA, Inc. delegation to the Congress included Olha Trytyak, Sophia Hewryk, Iryna Kurowyckyj, Jaroslawa Rubel, Oxana Farion, Irena Chaban, Orysia Lonchyna and Maria Kramarchuk. Mrs. Krawczuk was elected to preside over the Congress. UNWLA members serving on the WFUWO Board were Natalia Danylenko, Iryna Russnak, Olha Stawnycha, Helen Prociuk and Christine Nawrocky. Honorary UNWLA and WFUWO member Mary V. Beck also attended, igniting a spark for future endeavors of both organizations by her uplifting speech. November 9, 1997. Philadelphia, PA. The 50th anniversary of UNWLA Branch 20, whose patron is Olena Teliha, was celebrated at the Cultural Center in Jenkintown, PA. UNWLA President Anna Krawczuk spoke at the banquet and presented a certificate to Branch 20 President Lidia Diachenko. She also congratulated UNWLA Branch 52 whose members recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. November 9, 1997. Parsippany, NJ. Vice President Olha Trytyak represented the UNWLA at the official opening ceremonies of the Ukrainian National Association's new building at 2200 Route 10 in Parsippany. She presented greetings from the UNWLA, Inc. Executive Committee and her photograph from the event was published in the UNA's Ukrainian language newspaper Svoboda. November 21-22, 1997. Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Meeting of the World Congress of Ukrainians. As a member of the WCU Presidium, Anna Krawczuk attended. November 22, 1997. Stamford, CT. 60th anniversary of the Library and the Ukrainian Museum of the Stamford Diocese. Representing the UNWLA were Vice President Iryna Kurowyckyj and Our Life editor-in-chief Irena Chaban. UNWLA Recording Secretary Barbara Bachynsky represented the Ukrainian Museum of New York. November 23, Passaic, NJ. 40th anniversary of UNWLA Branch 70, patron Vira Bobenko. Vice President Olha Trytyak attended the celebration and presented a certificate of recognition from the Executive Committee. Representing the UNWLA Regional Council of New Jersey was its President, Maria Polanskyj. November 23, 1997. Newark, NJ. 65th anniversary of UNWLA Branch 28.
