From left: Very Rev. Patrick Paschak, OSBM and Most Rev. Bishop Basil Losten. NEWS FROM UNWLA HEADQUARTERS New York. On November 2, 1997, the members of the Ukrainian community gathered on East 6th Street to witness the blessing of the "cornerstone" of the future home of the Ukrainian Museum by the Most Reverend Basil Losten, Bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Diocese of Stamford. The museum is a treasury of art and artifacts representative of centuries of Ukrainian culture. The blessing ceremony was followed by a reception at the Ukrainian National Home. After an invocation by Bishop Losten, brief opening remarks were offered by the Ukrainian Museum's President Ivan Luchechko, Ukrainian Museum Building Committee Chair Roman Hawrylak and Master of Ceremonies Dr. Michael Yarymovych. The Ukrainian Museum was founded in 1976 by the UNWLA, Inc and the banquet program included information on the UNWLA's active role in the museum's history from 1976 to the present. To mark the occasion of the long anticipated move to a new site, it was fitting that the first speaker at the banquet reception was Anna Krawczuk, the UNWLA’s current president. Ms. Krawczuk’s remarks in full: Mr. President Professor Ivan Luchechko, Most Reverend Basil Losten, Reverend clergy, Distinguished and Honored guests, members of the Ukrainian Museum in New York City, and Dear Soyuzanky - members of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America. It is a great honor for me to welcome all of you at this historic and long awaited moment -the groundbreaking for the new home of the Ukrainian Museum in New York City. The dreams of my predecessors are coming so much closer to realization, and I stand here in awe and honor for their foresight and determination. Their legacy is secured in three treasure chests - - the past, the present and the future. I dare to open the treasure chest of the past.
