positive. "You have uplifted the women of Lviv." "You are not only the First Lady of the United States, but the First Lady of the world." After the reception, the "First Lady of the world" traveled by motorcade back to the Lviv airport. Smiling and waving to the crowds, she boarded her plane for the ten hour return trip to the United States. WINTER TARAS SHEVCHENKO Youth is over; chill wind has dispelled hope. Winter. You sit alone in your cold house No one to speak with No one to take counsel with. None. None at all. You sit alone until hope comes To fool the fool, to mock again, To blow proud thoughts away Like snowflakes on the steppe Wait not for spring to come To green your orchard and renew your hope Or to release your wayward thoughts ... It will not come for you, stay as you are And wait for nothing more. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Dear Editor: Every month, the first the first thing I do when I receive my copy of Our Life is flip to the English language section in the hope offinding yet another article by DMZ. DMZ has a keen eye for the quirks and foibles of the Ukrainian diaspora. Her vignettes of our community bring out both its finer and less desireable characteristics, and are always written with love, respect and humor. I look forward to DMZ's next contribution. Very truly yours, Olena W.
