107TH INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION OF GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUBS by ANNA KRAWCZUK An international organization dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service and to providing opportunities that strengthen the role o f women. (Mission Statement of the General Federation of Women's Club) The General Federation of Women's Clubs held its annual International Convention at the Fairmont Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, June 12 to June 15, 1998. As an associate member of the GFWC since 1952, the Ukrainian National Women's League of America, Inc. has voting eligibility and Anna Krawczuk, president of the UNWLA, exercised this right as a delegate at the convention. The World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations was represented by Vice President Chrystia Bidiak, the Ukrainian Gold Cross by President Natalia Iwaniw, and the UNWLA New Jersey Regional Council by it president, Maria Polanskyj. Until the installation of new officers, International President Faye Z. Dissinger chaired the Convention. Maxine Scarbro was elected president for a two year term. "Unity in Diversity" is part of the GFWC logo and the slogan "Celebrate WOMEN: Past, Present, Future" reflected the proceedings of the convention. Guest speakers included Dr. Susan Blumenthal, Assistant Surgeon General and Senior Science Advisor in the US Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Blumenthal is also Vice President for Health Affairs and a visiting professor at George Washington Medical Center. Recognized as a national expert on women's health and mental illness, Dr. Blumenthal provided insights not only on women's health problems, but also on medical research that until recently was male oriented. Every aspect of GFWC activities was discussed at numerous workshops. Topics were varied and covered community improvement and individual betterment, public speaking, grant writing, the Internet, Libraries 2000/Public Relations and International Relations. Special emphasis was given to junior and regular membership. The role of ethnic American organizations was discussed at the International Workshop where one of the topics under discussion was the nature these organizations. Organizations such as the UNWLA, for example, based and registered in the United States, are widely viewed as Ukrainian American, but are in essence American. Besides the business agenda, the GFWC conven tion included award ceremonies recognizing signi ficant contributions and achievements of groups and individuals.
