Participants of the international Convention of the GFCW. anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy at the White House. The UNWLA President was invited by President Bill Clinton to a briefing and celebration for ethnic Ameri cans which took place in Washington, D.C. President Anna Krawczuk and Vice President Iryna Kurowyckyj attended the Fourth World Conference on Women and were speakers at the workshop on “Nuclear Disaster and its Effect on Health and Environment”. The UNWLA founded the Ukrainian Museum in New York City where we will soon be breaking ground for a new building to house this museum. We have an exten sive scholarship fund that has allowed many young people to achieve middle and higher education in coun tries such as Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Poland, Romania, Ukraine and the United States. We also have other ongoing programs such as social services, educa tion and culture just to name a few. To keep abreast of environmental issues, the recent UNWLA convention voted to institute a committee to deal with ecology and the environment. We are the keepers of this earth, and it is our obligation to leave this planet livable for those who come after us. Iryna thanked the Nashville Tennessee GFCW and the international hostesses for their warm hospitality: “Madame President, I thank you for doing so much for so many”. Natalia Iwaniw, Gold Cross, reported on the work of her philantropic organization that provides humanitar ian aid. This organization also provides food, clothing and medical supplies to three cities. The following day, June 18, elections were held. The 105th annual convention elected Faye Z. Dissinger to the post of International President of GFWC. The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) was founded in 1890. GFWC traces its roots back to Jane Cunningham Croly, an accomplished New York newspaper woman, who wrote under the pen name of Jennie June. Indignant that she and other women were denied admittance to a banquet honoring Charles Dickens in 1868 at the all-male New York Press Club simply becouse they were women, she determined to organize a club for women only. Mrs. Croly proposed a conference in New York that brought together delegates from 61 women’s clubs, on the last day of the conference, the women took action to form a permanent organization. A committee to draft a constitution and plan of organization to be ratified the following year was chosen. The constitution was adopted in 1890, and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs was born. It was chartered in 1901 by the US Congress. It has members in forty countries. By the turn of the century the GFWC was a member of the National Coun cil of Women of the USA. The UNWLA has ben a member of the GFWC since 1948.
