interpretation of the material provided a delightful way for conventioneers to unwind after the day’s hectic schelude. Sunday, May 26, began with a spirit of ecumenism. Divine liturgy was celebrated by Bishop V. Paska of the Ukrainain Catholic Church and by Reverend I. Mironko of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. In a moving speech, Lidia Czemyk commemorated the Chornobyl nuclear disaster. Morning sessions focused on reports about the Ukrainian museum (Luba Firchuk) organizational mat ters (Natalia Danylenko and Sophia Hewryk), finances (Taissa Turiansky and Roma Shuhan) and ecology (Iryna Kurowyckyj and Marta Jarosewich). The afternoon ses sion was focused on the election of officers to the National Board for a three year term. Anna Krawczuk was reelected as President. A gala banquet on Sunday evening featured installa tion of officers by Iryna Russnak, a keynote address by Ukrainian parliamentary deputy Olena Krandakova, chairwoman of the Kuchma administration’s committee on women and children. UNWLA President Anna Krawczuk spoke on the increasingly multi-faceted work of the UNWLA in the last few years, citing the organiza tion’s continuing assistance to Chornobyl victims, scho larship awards to Ukrainian students, UNWLA publica tions, and participation of the UNWLA leadership at conferences (including the UN Fourth World Confer ence on Women in China), at White House activities during the recent state visit of Ukraine’s President Leo nid Kuchma, and at First Lady Hillary Clinton's recep tion commemorating the Chornobyl tragedy. During the banquet, Stephania Chyzhowych-Pushkar was posthu mously elevated from Honorary Member to Honorary President of the UNWLA. Honorary Membership was bestowed upon Ulana Starosolska, Chrystia Nawrocka, Stephanie Wowchok, Mary Dushnyck and Iwanna Wowk. The Kovaliv prizes for excellence in literature, presented Hawaii night at the UNWLA convention. From left: Nila Steckiv, Lidia Czemyk and Anna Krawczuk. Guests were entertained by musical se lections performed by Luba and Mykola from Lviv. Greetings and congratulatory messages from Presidents Clinton and Kuchma and from various organizations and individuals were read. Monday’s events included voting on resolutions, a discussion about a UNWLA home page on the Internet, reports on younger branches and English speaking branches, and the closing ceremonies. Throughout the convention, UNWLA members and their guests had the opportunity to enjoy a well-orga nized and comprehensive exibit of UNWLA activities and publications. A commemorative convention book, featuring a history of the UNWLA and reports of all UNWLA branches, was available as were assorted con vention souvenirs. Much of the success of the convention can be attributed to the planning and coordination activities of the convention committee headed by Mrs. Maria Kon- drat and Mrs. Christine Izak, and to the diligent and tire less efforts of members of Philadelphia’s Branch 88 who were responsible for registering guests, providing infor mation as needed, and otherwise assisting conventio neers and their guests.
