Over Memorial Day weekend 1996, the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America held its 24th con vention at the Radisson Hotel in Trevose, Pennsylvania. Hosted by the Philadelphia Regional Council, the con vention was attended by approximately 300 UNWLA members from all parts of the United States and by guests from Canada and Ukraine. They gathered to par ticipate in UNWLA activities, to meet old friends and make new ones, to network and honor outstanding UNWLA members. Two important events were comme morated at the convention. The first was the anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster. The second was the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UNWLA. Each event has had a significant impact on the Ukrainian community; each, in its own way, had a significant impact on the tone and agenda of the convention. On Friday, May 24, a pre-convention program mod erated by Iryna Kurowyckyj featured three guest speak ers of Ukrainian descent who have distinguished them selves in the American political arena. Melanne Verveer, deputy assistant to President Clinton and deputy chief of staff to Hillary Rodham Clinton, Taras Bazyluk, speech writer in the State Department’s Arms Control and Disarma ment Agency, and Marta Zielyk, official interpreter for the Clinton administration. The UNWLA Member of the Year Award was presented to Ms. Verveer. The convention was officially opened by UNWLA president Anna Krawczuk on Saturday, May 25. A pro cession of members of the National Board and honorary UNWLA presidents Lidia Burachynsky and Maria Sav- chak was greeted in the main hall of the convention site by Oxana Farion, president of the Philadelphia Regional Council, with the traditional bread and salt welcome. One of the highlights of the morning activities was the ceremonial lighting of the tree of life candelabra by the presidents of the nine UNWLA Regional Councils and by a Mason for Branches at Large.
