/ was in C hornobyl during the days of the dis aster and as a witness of the afterm ath of this catastrophe, I saw the frightening portrait of an apocalypse w orld — the dead city of Prypiat', the em pty Polissiyan villages, the woods and waters contam inated with radiation. It is impossible to forget these images or to come to peace with them. Ten m ore years will pass, and then twenty, even fifty years, but I am thoroughly convinced that the Ukrainian people will not forget the ordeal which befell them. In a m om ent of silence and prayer for the victims of Chornobyl, I join all of you who value their mem ory. A ccept my deepest respect and heartfelt greetings. The evening’s highlight was the performance of tenor Bohdan Chaplynsky and soprano Dr. Yukiko Ishida, whose renditions of arias from various operas compelled numerous standing ovations from the audience. Mr. Chaplynsky, who has performed at Carnegie Hall and who is currently a featured artists with the Rittenhouse Opera Society, the Berks Opera Company and the Pic- cola Opera, delighted those assembled with selections from Tosca, Pagliacci, Turandot and Bohdan Chm el- nyckyj. The audience was equally receptive to the beau tiful arias from La Traviata and The B arber of Seville, which were performed by Dr. Ishida. Dr. Ishida, who Dr. Yukiko Ishida and Bohdan Chaplynsky. holds a Master of Music from Temple University and a doctorate from Combs College of Music, has won numerous prestigious awards for her singing and is cur rently teaching at Manor Junior College. The audience was particularly captivated when Dr. Ishida, a native of Japan, sang two solo selections from S. Hulak-Arte- movsky’s Zaporozhets Za D unayem and then joined Mr. Chaplynsky in the stirring duet of the opera’s young lovers, Oksana and Andriy. A sustained standing ova tion resulted in an encore duet, the enchanting “ Libi- amo” from Verdi’s La Traviata. Mr. Chaplynsky and Dr. Ishida were accompanied by Dr. Darryl Hobson-Byrd, a renown pianist and conductor who has performed throughout the world and has worked with world famous conductors such as Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa.
