REMARKS BY ROSALIE POLCHE AT THE LUNCHEON COMMEMORATING THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNWLA ON SATURDAY, MAY 25,1996, AT THE XXIV CONVENTION Presentation of 70-th Anniversary citations to Branches 4 Regional Councils. From left: Oksana Farion and Anna Krawczuk. Photo on the right of Branch # 3 of original five Branches that Founded UNWLA Inc. I am deeply honored to have been asked to talk to you about the picture that is displayed here on the easel. This picture is of our Founding Pioneer Members of Branch 3, Soyuz Ukrainok. It was then known as the "Women’s Aid Society” or "Жіноча Поміч”. The photo was taken on the occasion of their 10th Anniversary in 1935. The President then was Olga Shust. Her son, William Shust, a well know stage and TV per sonality, is donating this picture to the UNWLA Archives. He is proud of his Ukrainian heritage — and on one occasion when in Kiev, he recited excerpts from Taras Shevchenko and was wildly acclaimed. I would like to add that his sister Mary Pilipshen is also a “Soyuzanka.” My own dear mother, Mary Chuma, is in this picture too. She was my inspiration and made me join as a jun ior member of Branch 3, along with the other daughters. Also shown here is Julia Jarema, Paraskevia Sere- diuk, Mary Marusevich, Eva Kobzar, Mary Hawrylowich, and Barbara Gruchowsky — who is now living in a Health Care Center in North Port, Florida. Last November in 1995, Mrs. Gruchowsky celebrated her 100th Birth day. When my husband and I paid her a visit in February of this year, we found her playing Bingo and enjoying it. She kept asking me about "Soyuz Ukrainok” and always recalls the early days. Sad to say, her daughter Stacy is also at the Health Care Center after having suffered a severe stroke. Stacy too is proud to have served in the UNWLA. Some of the daughters of these pioneer members of Branch 3 who followed in their mother’s footsteps, and later became members of UNWLA Branch 72, are Mary Shust Pilipshen, Anastasia Gruchowsky Brodin, Dorothy Gruchowsky Wylder, Stella Wasylciw Demey, Rosalie Chuma Polche, and also two daughters-in-law, Agnes Jarema and Olga Jarema. I recall, as President of Branch 72, going to meet ings of the New York Regional Council and listening to Natalia Chaplenko, then President of the New York Regional Council, and the mother of our present National President Anna Krawczuk. I did not wholly understand her eloquent Ukrainian language at first, but I kept lis tening intently and persevered ”i навчилася!" And I certainly know how proud my mother would be today to know that I succeeded in serving and hold ing an office in the "Головна Управа!” I am certain that our mothers are watching over us from Heaven above! Thank you, and again thank you Irena (Kurowyckyj) for asking me to speak! NOTE: UNWLA Branch 1 is the only founding Branch that is still functioning — and growing — and is still # 1. Branch 1 received a special award citation at this Luncheon. 18 "НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 1996 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
