and I was asked many questions, especially about my policies regarding tardiness and absenteeism and how they affect the final grade. I explained that in a class where the grade is determined by how much and how well students speak as well as how they respond as listeners, tardiness and absenteeism can easily affect a student’s grade. I also pointed out that the students’ final grades are cumulative and that they cannot pass a class by performing well only on the final exam. It is important to note here that Ukrainian students I had talked with complained about classmates who, despite doing little work during the semester, had passed courses because the final exam was the sole determining factor in assigning the final grade. The students saw this grading system as extremely unfair, and apparently, the teachers in my module were of like mind on this issue. Many of them asked for copies of the syllabus to show the rectors of their universities. While I feel that we covered quite a bit of material in those six hour modules, my one regret is that I did not get to hear about what my Ukrainian colleagues are doing in their own classrooms. I hope to rectify this during the ten months that I will be spending in Vinnytsia during the 1995-96 academic year. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Sally La Luzerne-Oi was born and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin. She has taught in Venezuela, Mexico, Portugal, Japan and Ukraine and for the past six years has been teaching ESL and French at Hawaii Pacific University. She has co- authored a listening and speaking textbook, Tell Me About It, which was published in 1994 by Heinle and Heinle. In 1994 and 1995 she was a member of a team of American teachers who worked in the Summer Institute on Current Methods and Practices in TESOL, a teacher training program which was directed by Professor Zirka Voronka and sponsored by the Ukrainian National Association. Ms. La Luzerne-Oi was recently awarded a Fulbright grant which will allow her to work and study in Vinnytsia during the 1995-96 academic year. Articles from other Summer Institute participants will be appearing in future issues of Our Life. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor: I recently read the article “Ukie School — Preserv ing Our Roots” which was published in the September issue of O ur Life and wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it. The article reminded me of my own days in “Ukrainoznavstvo,” especially how I resented going to school for the sixth day in a row while all of my Ameri can friends slept in on Saturday mornings and played sports during the day. I was also reminded of the Ukie school teachers our class had to deal with, the nick names we gave them, and the tricks we played on them. In grade 11,1 announced to my parents that I did not intend to do my “matura” in grade 12 and then changed my mind. All of the teachers were surprisingly great dur ing this ordeal — one even wrote hints on the black board to help us along. Our class had seven graduates. To this day, whenever I see any of my former class mates, I am pleased that I had the chance to learn about Ukraine, its heritage and culture with such a nice group of people. I hope others enjoyed reliving their Ukie school days after reading this wonderful article. Sincerely, Natalia K. Bilash Millburn, New Jersey Deaar Readers: We’d like to hear from you.
