O U R L I F E Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women's League of America JANUARY 1996 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO MARTHA T. PELENSKY Profile of a Petroleum Engineer BY TAMARA STADNYCHENKO Come and listen to the story of a man named Jed, A poor mountaineer, barely kept his fam’ly fed, And then one day he was shootin’ at some food And up from the ground came a bubblin’ crude. Oil, that is. Black gold. Texas Tea. Any one who has seen ’’The Beverly Hillbillies” will remember the silly lyrics and the sillier story line about the Clampetts and their rags to riches saga. Oil found, oil sold, hillbillies turned millionaires and then misfits in a posh California community which finds their rustic manners and down home lifestyle either amusing or embarrassing and sometimes both. Song and story focus on the oil gush and the ensuing wealth of the family; no attention is given to the intervening process that created that wealth and made the Clampett saga and the sitcom’s premise possible. And herein lies the more intriguing tale. Jed’s find, crude oil (or petroleum), is a gooey black mess that comes from the ground and is eventually transformed into useful components and products like propane, butane for cigarette lighters, gasoline for automobiles, kerosene for heating and diesel fuel for jet aircraft, heavy fuel for marine vehicles, asphalt, tar, and lubricants like oil for cars. Petroleum and petroleum based products are a vital part of our civilization, providing us with comforts, luxuries and basic life necessities that most of us take for granted. Few people concern themselves with how these products are made and where they come from. And even fewer are aware of the role played by the alcehmist that performs this transformation — the petroleum process engineer. One of these alchemists is a Ukrainian-American woman named Martha T. Pelensky and this is her story. ’’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 1996 15
