THE YEAR OF THE FAMILY 1994 A Review by IRENA OLEKSIUK A soft cover book called The Year of the Family 1994 was published by the UNWLA in 1995. Edited by Mrs. Olga Trytyak and her editorial staff, the book is a collection of award winning essays written by Ukrainian youth between the ages of 7 to 18. Of the 426 essays submitted, 260 were from the Uni ted States, 147 from Ukraine and 19 were from Austra lia, Brazil, Canada, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Switzerland. Seven groups Of jurors chose 48 winning essays from the United States, 54 from Ukraine and nine from other countries. 33 of the winning essays were submitted by contestants from special education classes in the Lviv region. Although contestants could enter essays written in any language, most of the essays in the book are in Ukrainian. The essays are grouped according to country of origin and ages of the contestants. They are extremely thoughtfull, unique and original. No two are alike although the ideas of love, togetherness, closeness and unity are prevalent. Most of the essays express the authors’ opinions of what constitutes a family unit for them individually, although many writers also express an opinion as to what makes up an ideal family. Some express a very sincere desire for a strong family unit upon reaching marrying age. Many are grateful for the family and friends they have. Very poignant and touching are the essays written by students who were orphaned and are in residential schools for children without families. Lack of love, loss of parents and being alone when others leave for the holidays are the prevalent themes in these essays. How ever, many of the writers point out that teachers and friends keep them from starving for love and do help brighten their overall perspective on life. Lovely and colorful illustrations as well as dramatic or whimsical black and white etchings complete the book of essays. The illustrators range in age from 7 to 9. Of the illustrations submitted (101 from the United States, 64 from Ukraine, 3 from other lands), twenty were selected for publication. The cover illustration was submitted by a student from Ukraine. In the opinion of this author, a few more illustrations should have been included in the book. After reading many of the essays, I decided to share them with my sixth grade students at Maple School in Northbrook, Illinois, where I teach literature and Eng lish. I offered them ’’extra credit” for reading the English language essays and asked them to write their opinions. Most of the students responded that they agreed with the ideas expressed in the essays, were touched by them and were impressed with the quality of the writing. The UNWLA is certain that the dialogue which the young contestants had with their parents, teachers and friends in order to generate ideas discussed in their essays should certainly be of benefit to all concerned. Mrs. Olga Trytyak, along with her staff of editors and jurors, made a monumental contribution in organizing an international contest and in selecting and editing so many worthwhile essays and illustrations for publication. It is hoped that UNWLA members, their friends and all Ukrainians will be encouraged to purchase The Year of the Family 1994 for themselves and as gifts. The book would be of great use to schools of Ukrainian studies in the United States and Canada as part of the literature curriculum, for writing purposes and for topics for dis cussion. As an extra challenge, Ukrainian students who are interested in linguistics and languages at the high school and college level could translate the foreign lan guage essays into English so that the entire book could be republished in English. This would be of great benefit not only to the students involved in the task of transla tion, but to the Ukrainian cause in general, as there is a great need for English language materials on Ukrainian themes in our schools and libraries. The cost of The Year of the Family 1994 is $12.00 The book can be ordered through UNWLA Inc. UNWLA Inc. 108 Second Ave. or P.O. Box 172 New York, N.Y. 10003 Holmdel, N.J. 07733.
