September 1995. Beijing, China. UN Fourth World Conference on Women. From left: Olha Kobec (from Ukraine), Dr. Zoreslava Nizhnik (from Ukraine), WFUWO President Oksana Sokolyk, UNWLA President Anna Krawczuk, UNWLA Vice President Iryna Kurowyckyj and Jaroslaw Sokolyk, World Congress of Ukrainians. A few days after the Chornobyl disaster, the Ukrain ian Canadian Congress — Toronto branch became one of the first community based organizations to call for humanitarian aid to Ukraine and for international assist ance to fight the fires in the flaming reactor. The branch also offered to bring 10,000 children poisoned by radio activity to Toronto. The offer was rejected by Moscow. The World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organiza tions quickly joined those assisting the affected popula tion by sending medical supplies and technology, pro viding information, supporting a research projected called Children of Ukraine and lobbying at international forums for the need for governments to seriously address chemical and nuclear contamination. We have been doing this steadfastly. As the tenth anniversary of the tragic explosion nears, let us reflect on those years and how they per manently altered the lives of millions of innocent peo ple. After the explosion, Moscow doctors categorically stated that everything was alright, that the dose of radia tion was so minimal there was no reason for any illness. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Let us also take a look at what can be done even now — to learn from the tragedy, to assist those in need and to prevent future disasters. Thank you Madam Chairperson.
