CHRISTMAS EVE A CHRISTMAS PLAY IN TWO ACTS by VASYL’ GRENDZHA-DONSKYJ Translated into English by Natalia L. Basladynsky and Professor Helene N. Sanko, John Carroll University. ACT I Village house on Christmas Eve Day (Wife is busy at the oven. Grandmother is sitting in the corner shelling the dry beans) Wife: (to her son): Ivan, hand me the long paddle; it’s time to place the dough in the oven. (Ivan gives it to her) Ivan: Mother, I can hardly wait until this evening... As soon as evening comes, we are going caroling. Our teacher taught us new Christmas carols... Grandmother: And you will make some money... Ivan: All the money that we will earn we will donate to the library. Wife: But what will you do if a household does not have any money? Ivan: Our teacher said that we will accept not only money but also grain, wheat, rye, and oats... What ever one has, it’s for a good cause... Grandmother: But the schoolboys aren’t strong enough to carry all of that... Ivan: Don’t worry Grandma, we already designated someone to carry the donations. The teacher inivited young men and older girls to come carol ing with us... Three young men are going to carry the donations and follow us... here a cup of beans, there a bowl of grain, and a bag or two will be collected. When the bag is full, we will leave it at a household and will start with a new bag. The Second Day we will collect them. My teacher told us that last year they collected ten bags of grain, not only money.. (Pause) Mom, Mommy, look, the teacher is coming this way! MAIN CHARACTERS The Head of the household — Husband The Grandmother The wife The Teacher Ivan (John), their son Carolers Wife: Oh my goodness, the house is so untidy... Ivan, quick, help me cover the table and put the chairs in place... (Knock at the door is heard) Please, please come in! Teacher: Hello! Good Day! Wife: Good Day to you! Ivan: Hello, teacher! Wife: Please sit down... Please excuse the mess. Teacher: That is normal — it’s the holiday season... I just came for a minute to remind Ivan to come to school this evening. Don’t forget you’re caroling with us! Ivan: I know Teacher, I know, I can hardly wait ’till even ing time... Teacher: Splendid! Well then, I’am off now, I do not want to be in the way here. Wife: Oh! please don’t leave so soon, teacher. We’re so delighted that you came... You do not come so often, please stay a while longer. Teacher: Ah, true, one must sit down in order to sleep better... Grandmother: Sleep or no sleep we hope the chickens don’t bother us. Teacher: See, I didn’t know that saying. Then I’ll sit a bit (he sits). Well Ivan, did you behave yourself today For as the saying goes, one who behaves himself on Christmas Eve will remain good for the rest of the year. But the one that misbehaves on Christ mas Eve will be spanked until next Christmas. Ivan: I was good the entire day... Teacher: Now tell me, do you know what your mother is baking right now?
