Kuzyszyn NEWS FROM UNWLA HEADQUARTERS: December 17, 1993 — New York, NY., secretary of Soyuz Ukrayinok in Ukraine, Irena Kravchuk, was a guest of honor at the traditional Christmas tree lighting held by the UNWLA New York Regional Council. January 21-23, 1994 — Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Anna Krawczuk attended the meetings of the Executive Board of the World Congress of Ukrainians. February 5, 1994 — Warren, ML, UNWLA President, Anna Krawczuk, visited and was the keynote speaker at the UNWLA Detroit Regional Council annual meeting and election of officers. Lidia Kolodchin was elected president. February 10, 1994 — Washington, DC. At the invi tation of President Bill Clinton, Anna Krawczuk, together with over twenty representatives of the Ukrainian Ameri can community, attended a briefing at the White House to discuss U.S.-Ukraine relations. The President outlined the progress in economics, political and military issues between the two nations, which included the financial aid of 700 million dollars. Vice-President Albert Gore and other Staff members were also present. The spokes man for the Ukrainian American community, Julian Kulas, Esq. presented a four page petition to the Pre sident. He indicated that the Ukrainian American Com munity’s main concern is the security of Ukraine and the welfare of its people. IN B R I E F i A Summary of Articles in the Ukrainian Section. In honor of the birth anniversary of poet Taras Shevchenko, the Ukrainian section included Bohdan Lepky’s poem: “Sud nad Shevchenkom” (Trial of Shev chenko). This issue also contains Part 2 of Iwanna Rozan- kowsky’s article documenting the 50th anniversary of O u r L ife magazine. Who can forget Oksana Baiul’s breathtaking figure skat ing performance which won her a gold medal at XVII Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway. Author Yurij Shevchuk, in his essay “New Business card of Ukraine in America” (literal translation of title), touches on some of the Olympic controversy surrounding the 16 year old orphan from Ukraine. Mr. Shevchuk also in cludes some published quotes from journalists and skat ing experts, and concludes that because of Oksana Bai- ul’s accomplishment, Ukraina and its people have be come more known in USA and in the world. In her article entitled “New Aspects of Shevchenko Study in Ukraine”, Anna Halja Horbatshch examines Taras Shevchenko’s literary connections with world liter ary movements, especially that of neoclassicism (or praising of the Classics, imitating their style). The author draws interesting parallels and reflects on Shev chenko’s many literary influences.
