Weddings — the specific dress (head gear, wedding costumes of various regions), the particular customs and rituals (as in a Hutsul wedding), or the various types of wedding breads, the korovai, offer a rich source of material from which to plan an exhibition. However, these projects require a thorough knowledge of the sub ject and accurate representations. D. Specialized Ukrainian folk art exhibitions can be confined to one particular area of interest. As an example, such an exhibition may deal with the pysanka, Ukrainian Easter egg, presenting variations in design, coloration, symbo lism, as well as customs and traditions associated with this beautiful object. The Ukrainian pysanky which have developed a global reputation as the ambassadors of Ukrainian fok art heritage lend themselves very well to specialized exhibitions. Pysanky are “hams” when it comes to being shown at exhibition and never fail to delight viewers, young and old. Pysanky can be arranged in showcases according to the above mentioned cate gories, however attention should be paid not to allow overcrowding. A live demonstration on how to make Ukrainian pysanky is an excellent way to round out the egg exhibition. It should be remembered that egg decorating is an ancient art practiced by many cultures throughout the world. A basic knowledge of the history of egg decorat ing in general will enhance the presentation of the Ukrainian pysanky exhibition. It should be remembered that egg decorating is an ancient art practiced by many cultures throughout the world. A basic knowledge of the history of egg decorat ing in general will enhance the presentation of the Ukrainian pysanka exhibition. Specialized exhibitions can present rushnyky, ritual cloths, which play such a significant part in Ukrainian religious and secular rituals. On the other hand such exhibitions can also examine the art of Ukrainian em broidery, with emphasis on various types of stitching techniques, designs and applications. Another sugges tion for an exhibit is to study the role of nature and its elements in the designs of Ukrainian ceramics. Presenting the exhibition EXAMPLE Scenario — the town library will hold an ethnic fes tival and has contacted your organization to participate. You will have space in the library to prepare and mount an exhibition of Ukrainian folk art. You find this a per fect opportunity to introduce your non-Ukrainian friends and neighbors to a part of your cultural heritage. Here are some suggestions on how to approach this project: 1. Define your objective. What do you want to say with this exhibition? What do you want to accomplish by it? What do you want your audience to learn from it? Do you want the end result to be fleeting or long last ing? Knowing your objective will facillitate making the presentation. Ukrainian folk art is very versatile and its uniqu eness and beauty can easily be conveyed if properly presented. You cannot possibly introduce your audience to every aspect of Ukrainian folk art, therefore be dis criminating and choosy so that the theme and objects selcted to represent it convey your message. Remember, teach your audience a little bit at a time, but thoroughly. 2. Define your knowledge. Research is the key to a successful exhibition. Aside from ethnographers or art historians, few people have knowledge of the vast scho larship which make up the Ukrainian folk art spectrum. Do not be guided by the misconception that because it is called “folk” art it is simple and unsophisticated. Also, Ukrainian ancestry does not guarantee automatic en lightenment on the subject. Ukrainian folk art has a long developmental history, influenced by social, economic, religious, environmental and political factors that have shaped and guided the inherent artistic creativity of the people. It is a large and involved field of study. Ukrain ian folk art is the heart and soul of the Ukrainian people and it must be presented factually, truthfully, and with dignity. It is not imperative that one be a scholar in order to mount a folk art exhibition. It is important however, that objects be correctly identified, properly arranged and the interpretive material accompanying the exhibition present factual information. To verify information, iden tify an object or ask advice when planning an exhibition consult with The Ukrainian Museum. 3. Define your project. What type of exhibition do you want to mount? Make sure you choose the theme of your exhibition ahead of time, so that you are comforta ble and confident with it during the planning phase. Once the basic concept has been formulated, be guided by common sense rather than impulse. Proceed slowly and carefully and record the changes, additions or revi sions to your general plan. When you have established the parameters of the project, ask yourself what are your resources and sour ces for acquiring the proper folk art objects you want for the exhibition? Remember, some objects may be of great value, therefore make sure the insurance aspect is taken care of to the satisfaction of the lenders, as well as you, the borrower. You will want to keep in mind the area which is available to you for the exhibition and make the approp riate selection of objects to tastefully and judiciously fill that space. 4. Define your audience. Who will be coming to see this exhibition? Keep in mind the vast range of people ’’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 1993 19
