ABOUT COMPOSER MYKOLA LYSENKO Vasyl Hrechynsky Lviv, 1903. The 35th jubilee commemorating the creative work of My kola Lysenko, who is in the second row, sixth from the left. The year is ending which marked the 150th anniver sary of the birth of Mykola Leontovych Lysenko, an individual who has gained an honored place within the scope of the Ukrainian culture and who embodies the stature of a great composer, a pianist, and a conductor, with that of a scholar/folklorist and an ardent commun ity activist. The name of Lysenko is tied to the greatest ac complishments in Ukrainian musical culture, to the development of which the composer dedicated his pas sionate heart, his musical soul and all of his life. By introducing the highest achievements of western Euro pean music and cultivating the inherent national charac teristics of Ukrainian vocal creativity, he conceived classical examples in all genres of music — opera, vocal/choral, instrumental, piano and solo — which laid the groundwork for our national musical tradition. The basis of Lysenko’s creativity was folk art in its most luminous form — the song. He was inspired by the beauty of the Ukrainian folk song, enriched through the wealth of its imagery. He became its devoted guide, winning for it acknowledgement and respect among other nations and cultures. His foundation was firmly established in the folk tradition. In his music he united the principles of professional art with particulars of the folk song and its choral harmony. Through dilligent work he developed the foundation for the musical lan guage of his art based on the Ukrainian national and folk legacy. Thus he created the climate in which future composers developed their talents. Mykola Lysenko is considered one of the greatest musical scholars/folklorists. All his life he collected Ukrainian songs and left more than 600 examples of folk songs, encompassing almost all types of song variants: ritual songs, life songs, historical songs and ballads. The folklore material and the research involved tested Lysenko’s creative skills. He grouped the songs by types and offered them in seven publications (40 songs in each) for voice with piano accompaniment, thirteen choral works, and five publications of ritual songs such as “Vesnianka,” "Kupal’ska Sprava,” "Koliadky ta Shche- drivky,” “Vesillia,” and a collection of dances and Spring songs entitled “Molodoshchi." He researched Ukrainian folklore and incorporated ’’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 1993 19
