THE UKRAINIAN MUSEUM: A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE 1993 is shaping up to be an exciting, yet challenging year for The Ukrainian Museum. The Ukrainian Museum Building Fundraising Committee has embarked on an intensive national campaign to raise funds for a new spacious, representative museum facility. Since last summer the Committee, headed by Anna Alyskewycz, has worked very hard to lay the groundwork for an effective strategy which would govern the campaign. In addition to preparing an informative brochure, compiling extensive mailing lists and working on a video presen tation, the Committee has made great strides in estab lishing contacts with individuals in various cities across the United States and Canada, who are willing to form regional community groups — Friends of the Museum — to help in the fundraising effort. A few such committees have already been working for several years in the northeast — in New York City, Rochester, NY, in New Jersey and Connecticut. Their activities involved getting new members for the Museum, organizing events and conducting telephone solicitations and mailings, all which raised money for the Museum’s Building Fund. The individuals on these committees are members of the community who believe in the Museum’s mission and support its programs. Their activities have raised thousands of dollars which helped the Museum to pay off its mortgage on a large commercial building, which, after major remodeling, will become the insti tution’s new home. The estimated cost of the remodeling (according to feasibility study by architect George Sawicki) is about 3.5 million. Friends of the Museum Committees throughout the country are very important not only as fundraisers, but also as information centers about the Museum, its work and goals. Held at the Merkin Concert Hall, the event featured the stars of the Ukrainian musical world: cellist Natalia Khoma, soprano Oksana Krovytska, pianist Laryssa Krupa, violinist Oleh Krysa, the Leontovych String Quartet, pianist Alexander Slobodianyk, pianist Mykola Suk, pianist Tatiana Tchekina, tenor Roman Tsymbala and pianist Volodymyr Vynnytsky. The artists generously donated their magnificent talents and made this concert a rare gem which the appreciative public acknowledged with a warm and rousing standing ovation. Following the concert, the artists and gusts met at a cocktail reception.
