that organization. UNWLA is the founder of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations. The VI Congress of the WFUWO was held in Toronto, Canada from October 28 to November 1,1992. Our organization took an active part in the Congress with 13 delegates present (we were entitled to 16 delegates). UNWLA branches collected $3,500 for the needs of the Congress. I must emphasize that our organization is the only member of WFUWO which raised such funds, yet at the previous meetings all other member organizations pledged to do so. I, therefore want to sincerely thank all Regional Council presidents for conducting this fundraising campaign, and for taking part in the Congress. On the eve of the Congress the Board of WFUWO held a meeting during which honorary members of the organization were nominated. They were: Dr. Marusia Beck, Dr. Natalia Pazuniak, Yaroslava Zorych, Oleksan- dra Myndiuk, Irena Vzesnevsky, Olena Prociuk and Lydia Hladky. The former President of the organization, Dr. Maria Kwitkowsky, was elected Honorary President. The Congress was held at the Royal York Hotel. The organizing committee was chaired by Oksana Bryzhun-Sokolyk. On Friday, October 30th I chaired the proceedings. The Congress program was quite full, or rather overfilled with excellent panels or lectures, leav ing little time for discussions. It was disappointing that there was no time at all for a discussion to follow the well prepared lecture by Oksana Bryzhun-Sokolyk. Oksana Bryzhun-Sokolyk was elected president of WFUWO. The following members of UNWLA became members of the WFUWO Board: Natalia Danylenko — second Vice-President, Olha Stawnychy — Public Rela tions, Iryna Russnak — Culture Chair, Chrystyna Nav- rocky — head of the Statutory Committee, Olena Prociuk — member of the Auditing Committee. Dr. Natalia Puz- niak headed the Resolutions Committee, with Chrystyna Navrocky as one of its members. The Financial Secre tary was not elected and the Congress empowered the Executive Board to find someone to fill the post. The ceremonial opening of the Congress was held on Thursday evening. The President of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs delivered a greeting to the audience. A formal banquet was held on Saturday even ing, during which the main speaker was Ulana Diachuk, Supreme President of the Ukrainian National Associa tion. On Sunday there was a concert honoring com poser Mykola Lysenko. As a member of WFUWO I am also a member of the presidium of the Secretariat of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians (WCFU), I take part in their meetings and on the following Friday I am going to Toronto to attend such a meeting. Sixteen years ago UNWLA founded The Ukrainian Museum, which is currently in a financial crisis. Cuts in federal and state aid have greatly contributed to this situation. The Museum is presently conducting an intensive fundraising campaign to help cover the costs of a new, spacious museum facility. Iryna Russnak is the Museum/Culture Chair. The Welfare program has widespread activities, par ticularly now when aid to Ukraine is possible. Our members participate and support these activities. As is already known, our organization had decided to provide specialized medical equipment for the Lviv Regional Council’s Specialized Hospital, which treats critically ill children — among them the victims of Chor- nobil. UNWLA has purchased four such machines for the sum of almost $130,000. This equipment has already been delivered to that hospital and is in use. Our Wel fare group works in cooperation with the founders of the hospital — the Chornobil Relief Fund — headed by Dr. Zenon Matkivsky. While in Kiev to attend the Forum, I was present at the Antonov Military Airport for a press conference in conjunction with the arrival of the world’s largest transport airplane Mria. The giant plane carried ambulances, medical equipment, medicines and vitam ins slated for hospitals in Lviv, Kiev and Kharkiv. Also on board were two medical machines purchased by UNWLA for the Children’s Hospital in Lviv. During the press conference I delivered UNWLA’s statement con cerning the equipment. I also had a short interview with CBS. Our welfare program also entails a Fund to Help the Needy in Ukraine. We have provided $500 to the Ukrain ian National Women’s League in Lviv to purchase a copying machine, $1,000 as a donation to the Andrej Sheptytskyj Hospital in Lviv, and $500 to help orphans. This last donation was presented to Maria Drach during our meeting with her in our headquarters. The Welfare Chair is Lydia Czernyk. The scholarship program of UNWLA, which celebra ted its 25th anniversary this year, has achieved first place in all diaspora, according to the report of the World Council of Welfare Programs of WCFU. The pro gram is also being implemented in Ukraine. It is headed by Anna Krawchuk. Olha Trytiak is the Education Chair and oversees the pre-school program. She organized an exhibition of children’s literature published in diaspora, in Lviv and Kiev, which was a great success. I was told about this exhibition by several individuals from Ukraine, who attended the WFUWO Congress in Toronto. In 1993 OUR LIFE will celebrate its 50th jubilee. The magazine has always adhered to high standards and continues to do so, according to the positive feedback from its readers. The editor is Irena Chaban who works closely with the Editorial Board. It is heartening that branches fund pages in the magazine, and pay subscrip tions for readers in Ukraine. Upon the recommendation of the Presidium of WCFU, I, as President of UNWLA have received an invi tation to attend the World Forum of Ukrainians as a 16 ’’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 1993 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
