O UR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women's League of America VOL. L FEBRUARY 1993 Editor: Marta Baczynsky ADDRESS OF UNWLA PRESIDENT MARIA SAVCHAK during the meeting of the National Board on November 14 and 15 1992 In May 1992 we held a major conference of presi dents of Regional Councils in order to give all the members of the Nominating Committee the opportunity to meet for the first time prior to the Convention. The UNWLA chairs of various committees were invited to discuss the plans they had made for the numerous pan els scheduled to be presented during the Convention. Together with the presidents of Regional Councils we were able to analyze the work of branches within their territories. During its meeting, the Executive Board of UNWLA agreed that the conference was a great suc cess, that the Regional Council presidents take their assignments seriously and cooperate fully with the Board. Let us examine our work during the last year. Expansion in the membership ranks is indispensible to any organization and it is therefore not surprising that the Organization Chair, Olha Hnateyko, made every effort to keep the membership stable in older branches, as well as in those recently formed. She is also in the process of preparing a much needed organizational guidelines handbook, which should be ready by the XXIII Convention. The Executive Board continues to be in touch with branches of the organization as well as with the general membership. We have made every effort to send an Executive Board member to regional conferences or jubilee celebrations of the individual branches. At times no one was available to go, and we feel badly about this. However, many times a branch or a Regional Council would inform us about an important event they have scheduled, but at the last minute. On such occasions we could only send an official document acknowledging the event, as well as greetings from the Board. Fre quently, these were sent by “overnight” mail, which is expensive. In the future, we will ask for a refund of the postage costs. I still hold the thought that UNWLA chairs should organize regional or inter-regional conferences. Such meetings are very informative both for the membership and the community. In November 1991 an inter-regional conference was held in Newark, NJ, sponsored by the Education and Press Chairs. It was well attended by members of the New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia regions. The large attendance shows that the membership is inte rested in the work of UNWLA and that such conferences are needed. Another conference was organized by Financial Chair Marta Danyluk and Press Chair Chrystyna Nav- rocky in Cleveland, Ohio (Ohio Regional Council). We know that the conference was very successful, however we are sorry that neighboring regions of Detroit and Chicago, as well as branch 27 in Pittsburgh, were not able to take part. We are continuing the scholarly/historical and liter ary contests underwritten by UNWLA’s Lesia and Petro Kowaliw Fund. The next scholarly/historical contest has been announced and two works have already been submitted for judging. The Kowaliw Fund is usually managed by the Chair for cultural affairs. Due to the fact that the Culture Chair, Lydia Hladky has moved to Florida, the Fund is currently overseen by Press Chair Chrystyna Navrocky. Overall, our public relations activities are going along well. UNWLA is a member of the National Council of Women of the United States, of the American Federa tion of Women’s Clubs and of the National Women’s Party. Public Relations Chair Dr. Martha Bohachevsky- Chomiak was instrumental in securing these member ships for our organization. Presently, she is in Kiev, lec turing at a university. However, she did recommend several individuals from branch 78 in Washington D.C. who could work in public relations on behalf of UNWLA. I am sure you are also familiar with the fact that member-at-large, Iryna Kurowyckyj is the first Vice President of the NCW of U.S., and Maria Tomorug, UNWLA’s Corresponding Secretary, is the Treasurer of НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 1993 15
