O UR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America VOL. XLIX NOVEMBER 1992 Editor: Marta Baczynsky ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UKRAINIAN NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEAGUE, MILENA RUDNYCKY, ON THE OPENING OF THE UKRAINIAN WOMEN’S CONGRESS IN STANYSLAVIV, JUNE 23, 1934. Milena Rudnycky was an individual of immense stature in Ukraine — a community and political activist, a teacher, a jour nalist and a leader in the Ukrainian women’s organizations and the women's movement. She was born in 1892 in Zboriv, Haly- chyna, studied at universities in Lviv and Vienna. She received a doctorate in philosophy as well as degrees in higher edu cation. From 1921 to 1939 Milena Rudnycky was the ideologist of the Ukrainian women's movement and one of its chief activists. For many years she was the president of the Ukrainian National Women’s League in Lviv, the president of the Ukrainian Wo men’s Congress in Stanyslaviv in 1934, president of the Inter national Ukrainian Women’s League, and headed the political women’s organization “Druzhyna Kniahyni Olhy.” During her term of office as president, the Ukrainian Na tional Women’s League developed into a large national organi zation which played a major role in the life of the communities in Western Ukraine. M. Rudnycky was also a political activist. From 1928-35 she was a representative of the Ukrainian National Democratic Union Party to the Polish Parliament, where she worked on educational and foreign affairs committees. As a member of the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation, she often presented Ukrainian petitions to the League of Nations in Geneva. Fre quently M. Rudnycky addressed various international audien ces throughout Europe in order to acquaint the world commun ity with the state of the Ukrainian people. From 1936-39 she was a member of the presidium of the Ukrainian Coordinating Committee in Lviv. Milena Rudnycky’s journalistic activities were equally en compassing. Since 1918 she was a regular contributor to sev eral publications and from 1935-39 the editor of Zhinka (Wo man), the publication of UNWL. After immigrating to the United States in 1950, M. Rudnycky worked on a free lance basis with the daily newspaper Svoboda and with the Ukrainian editorial staff of Radio Liberty in Munich. A momentous, festive day! A glorious festive moment! This is a special day on which we celebrate the fif tieth anniversary of the Ukrainian Women’s Movement. It is also extraordinary and magnificent because today the first all-Ukrainian Women’s Congress is being held. Let’s be honest: the fact that we were able to bring today’s Congress to fruition, that through united efforts we were able to realize this project, the fact that we were all here together regardless of external and inter nal difficulties, in spite of all obstacles and the mean — spiritedness of people — it fills us not only with glad ness but with pride. Is this not the first time in Ukrainian history that there is a congress boasting of such a vast territorial representation? Is this not the first time, that following the catastrophe of our nation’s fight for liberation, so many Ukrainians from many lands, and political parties, with various viewpoints, beliefs, and convictions, united towards one common national goal, inspired by the desire to strengthen that goal, to instill our ideals in others and to bring them to realization. “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 1992 19
