OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America VOL. XLIX JUNE, 1992 Editor: Marta Baczynsky UKRAINIAN FOLK WEDDING: RITUALS AND TRADITIONS А. Базилевич. Печуть коровай. 1963. One of the most important events in the life of any community anywhere in the world is the creation of a new family. This occasion is marked by a wedding ceremony and according to the custom of the land in which it occurs, it is as elaborate or as simple as tradi tion dictates. The numerous important elements of the wedding ceremony in the Ukrainian folk tradition have been formed in the distant past, during the pre-Christian, pagan times. It was then that each significant event in the life of an individual was marked with a definite ritual in order to emphasize its validity and to authenticate its legitimate status. Such rituals were also meant to bring good luck and ward off evil through the offering of sacrifices. Baking of the korovai. A. Bazylevych. 1963. In time the Ukrainian people accepted Christianity yet the ancient traditions were not abandoned. In fact, these traditions continued to play an important role in most holidays and celebrations and were particularly adhered to in the folk wedding. In a religious ceremony the Christian church unites a man and a woman as husband and wife. In addition to this the Ukrainian people legalized the new status of a married couple with the time honored ancient rituals and traditions that made up the “folk wedding.” Even in the old times many wedding rituals reflected some still more ancient realities which were part of that distant life and mores. As times marched on these ritu als became part of tradition, however in many cases their meaning and significance can no longer be fully understood. “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 1992 17
