A VISIT TO THE MUSEUM.. MARTA BACZYNSKY Гості Музею. Зліва: Ірина Куровицька, Аліція Паолоззі, Беті Солцман, Ціна Удовенко, Марія Савчак, Марія Шуст. Until very recently the Ukrainian community was fighting an uphill battle for basic recognition. Today most everyone has heard about us, Ukrainians, about our native land, Ukraine. The recognition issue still con tinues but on a different level and now its on the right t rack. The task of re-introducing Ukraine — its culture, history, its people — to the other nations of the world is much easier now. New opportunities abound. Just a few weeks ago the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America and The Ukrainian Museum had such an opportunity, and an unusual one at that! Through the International Hospitality Committee, a program of the National Council of Women, about sixty women — wives of representatives to the United Nations from various countries of the world — visited the Ukrainian Museum and were treated to a short cultural program and a tour of the galleries. This visit was organ ized by Iryna Kurowyckyj, UNWLA’s member-at-large on the Board, who has a long standing membership with the Hospitality Committee. Currently, Mrs. Kuro wyckyj is also serving as first vice president of NCW. With the cooperation of several members of UNWLA who baked delicious pastries for the occasion, and with the help of Museum staffers, the meeting of the “inter national set” and the “new Ukraine” got off to a marve lous start. Among the distinguished guests at the gathering were Betti Hellinger Salzman, the International Hospital ity Committee Chair and President Laureate of NCW, Mrs. Maria Savchak, President of UNWLA, Countess Alicia Paolozzi, President of NCW and Mrs. Diana Udo- venko, wife of the Ukrainian ambassador to the U.N. Guests at the Museum: fr. I.: Iryna Kurowytskyj, Countess Alicia Paolozzi, Betty Salzman, Dina Udovenko, Maria Savchak, Maria Shust. Because Mrs. Udovenko was scheduled to return to Ukraine, she was bid farewell by Mrs. Salzman on behalf of the Hospitality committee, by Mrs. Savchak, on behalf of UNWLA and by Maria Shust, Director of the Ukrainian Museum on behalf of the Museum. A very charming touch was the presentation of Jacques Hnizdovsky’s book “Woodcuts” to Betti Salz man, who was marking a birthday on that day. The book, signed by all the guests present at the event, was a gift from UNWLA. For close to thirty years Mrs. Salz man has been associated with the International Hospi tality Committee and is credited with being its “moving force.” The Committee is a hard working group which on a weekly basis uncovers the “back stage of New York City” to the wives of UN’s diplomatic corps. The pur pose is to show these honored temporary residents of our city what America, within the confines of the Big Apple is all about, pinpointing out the diversities of cul tural makeup which is the hallmark of our country. To acquiant the audience with UNWLA, Iryna Kuro wyckyj gave a brief account of the organization’s his tory, its purpose, growth and achievements. She refer enced UNWLA’s various programs on social welfare, education, and culture here and abroad. She also indi cated the organization’s participation in NCW through out the years. “UNWLA” looks back on its years of accomplishments with pride. We stand ready to con tinue our work toward equality, development and peace,” concluded Mrs. Kurowyckyj. She emphasized that even though Ukraine is a free country now, the work of the organization has not changed in essence, only its priori ties have been rearranged.
