UKRAINIAN NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEAGUE IN DROHOBYCH A LETTER FROM UKRAINE (translated from Ukrainian) For a year now OUR LIFE has been shipped to Dro- hobych, a city in the Ukrainian foothills of the Carpa thian Mountains. Our members of the Ukrainian National Women’s League eagerly await the magazine, since from its pages we learn how our sisters — Soyuzianky — live and work in America. We are very pleased to find that Ukrainian women far across the Atlantic have done their utmost to preserve the customs, traditions, language and culture of our people. We hope that some brief information about our activities will in turn be interesting to our colleagues in the United States. As in other parts of Ukraine, so in Drohobych women are involved in the socio-political life and in the national rebirth. In 1990 UNWL was renewed in our city and we are lucky that Mahdalyna Vorobec and Adriana Popel, women who took part in the women’s movement prior to World War II, became our honorary members. It was difficult, for us in the beginning, we had to contend with the problems of organization and form an agenda that would deal with the most important issues on hand. We first made an appearance as an organization on a holiday in front of the church where we took part in a mass and the blessing of a cross. Our motto was "Ukrainian women, a new day awaits you!” As a group, on August 21st we joined with the rest of the community to celebrate a holiday honoring Ivan Franko. Every year on Franko’s birthday, all those who revere his talent — writers, actors, students and many groups representing surrounding towns and villages — journey on a pilgrim age to Nahuyevychi, the place of his birth. In September 1990 we provided hot food for those people who kept a night vigil by the site of the former KGB prison where the burial places of the victims of Stalin’s repression were uncovered. A massive funeral for these victims was held in our city in July 1991. Our members adorned the coffins, only 486 of them, with wreaths and garlands. The socio-political life in Ukraine developed in a rather stormy manner and we tried to keep in step with the events. We helped students who proclaimed a hunger strike in Kiev in 1990, by collecting warm clothing, med icines, vitamins. We then picketed the Supreme Council so that the communist majority in the Parliament would hear that the people want to live in a democratic, inde pendent country. We wanted them to change the laws to make this desire a reality. We traveled to the eastern part of Ukraine to urge our countrymen and women to awaken to their Ukrainian identity. Our members worked in various committees during elections as observers in many cities and villages. Виставка вишиванок членкинь СУ у домі ”Просвіти” 20 квітня 1991 р. We met with writer Iryna Kalynets-Stasiv and introduced a book by Atena Pashko “Na perechres- tiach” (At the crossroads). We organized a meeting with Iryna Senyk, a longtime political prisoner, who not only read her poems but shared with us her original em broidery. In addition, we helped the local welfare organ ization which cares for handicapped children. There are more than 200 of these children in our town and in nearby villages. To raise the necessary funds we held lotteries, auctions as well as bake sales. Currently, there are only 50 of us, since most women work and raise families. Our president is Maria Potulak. Vira Baisa, the vice-mayor of Drohobych is our member, as are Nadia Kostyk, Olena Hanych, Daria Stoiko, Daria Yatsiv, Iryna Kylchytsky, Chrystyna Mychailviska, Nata lia Sorochka and Uliana Pavliuch, from the first day we began our activities. From this year’s first issue of OUR LIFE we learned that in October 1991 WFUWO held its annual meeting, where plans for the future were discussed. We would like to believe that the words of Oksana Sokolyk will come true: the time will come and the Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations will really come to Ukraine and from Kiev it will unite all women’s groups. We are excited about the possibility of cooperative efforts. We truly believe in a good future for our people and for our Ukraine.
