THE UKRAINIAN MUSEUM A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR UKRAINIANS TO HAVE A MUSEUM IN NEW YORK CITY? Кераміка з колекції Українського Музею в Нью-Йорку. Дарунок Володимира Пушкара в пам’ять його дружини Стефаніі. Ceramics from the collection at the Ukrainian Museum in New York. Gift of Wolodymyr Pushkar in memory of his wife Stefania. In a article published in “ Literaturna Ukraina” in May 1988, the organization “Ukraina” and the Ukrainian Cultural Fund called to all Ukrainians in diaspora to make sure that all collections pertaining to our native art and culture be returned to Ukraine. However, is this a conviction shared by all art connoisseurs and supporters? What do museum workers, artists, archivists, scholars or owners of private collections think about this? In the last two years the Ukrainians Museum in New York City contacted several museums in Ukraine in order to establish cooperative relations in exhibition exchanges. How did these museums react to such a program? Let us selected a typical answer from the large correspondence the Museum has in its files dealing with this subject. The director of the Lviv Art Gallery, Borys Woznyckyj wrote that currently the Museum can borrow exhibitions such as Ukrainian portraits of the 16th-18th centuries, drawings of European masters from museum collections in Lviv, and an exhibition of the Lviv secession. He went on to say that later on other exhibition exchanges can be discussed. He expressed co n ce rn fb o u t fu n d in g such an o p e ra tio n , transportation of the objects to New York, insurance, and accomodations for his curators and workers who would be required to travel with the exhibition. It is therefore obvious that there is a good deal of interest in Ukraine for cooperative exchanges of programs with our Museum in New York, since every e xh ib itio n o ffers one more step tow ard the popularization of Ukrainian culture in the world. Since we have the opportunity to bring the uniqueness of Ukrainian culture to the public in The Ukrainian Museum in New York City, the institution should be strongly supported and helped in this endeavor. Every museum in Ukraine has beautiful and interesting collections. Exhibiting them in America, would draw the attention of hundreds or thousands of people, thus again propagating Ukrainian culture. On a visit to Ukraine, a western visitor can only partially see what treasures are preserved by museums there, since most everything is hidden in storage and only a tiny portion is allowed on display to the general public. There are numerous reasons for this state of affairs, some of which are a lack of space, as well as the still prevailing old ideology. For example: in the National Museum in Lviv, which was founded in 1905 by Metropolitan Andrij Sheptytsky, there are over eighty thousand objects, but only one thousand are shown. This is a unique museum which has systematically collected representations of Ukrainian culture from the Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
