THE UKRAINIAN WOMAN IN TWO WORLDS” CONFERENCE On October 13, 14, 1990, the Embassy Suites Hotel in Piscataway, New Jersey with its lush tropical atrium, was the location of the third “Ukrainian Woman in Two Worlds” Conference. The verdant and healthy jungle gardens symbolized the vigor and commitment of Ukrainian women to our national future. The conference emphasized the impor tant role women must play. They must revitalize the Ukrainian ancestral tree of life through their personal commitment. The Women’s Conference gave us the key to this revitalization, “In unity — strength”. The theme was echoed throughout that weekend. It was expressed in many different ways by various speakers. The theme was echoed throughout that weekend. It was expressed in many different ways by various speakers. Ms. Luba Siryj, the Chairperson of the conference, Vice President of Ukrainian National Womens League of America, Branch #4 of New Brunswick, New Jersey welcomed everyone and introduced the keynote speaker, Ms. Larysa Skoryk. Ms. Skoryk, a busy member of the Ukrainian RADA of Kiev, was gracious enough to share her time with the conference, although so much cried for her attention at home. Ms. Skoryk’s address focused on her concern for the student hunger strikers in Kiev. A great worry was the fact that some students threatened self-immolation to call attention to their demands. The emerging leader ship in Ukraine, as yet is only female at a ratio of one in nine. Larysa Skoryk, therefore, was quite concerned with women’s health care, child care and their family problems. A great burden to women in Ukraine is forced military conscription and hard physical labor. Ms. Skoryk was to be the main speaker at the gala conference supper, however, her dedication to her con stituency at home forced a hasty return to Kiev. She heard that things could turn very ugly at any minute for the striking students and their supporters. She wanted to be with them. After witnessing such dedication, the inspired par ticipants of the conference attended all panels with eager interest.
