each member of the branch as well as their families. The event was so successful that plans are being made for the next Ukrainian Heritage Day in two years. Heritage Day was but one part of this year’s activi ties. The Urkainian Dance Group of Erie, under the direction of Margaret Corapi were invited artists at the Erie Art Festival and the Erie Zoo Peace Day. The Dance Group and the Ukrainian School, which held a well attended program honoring Taras Shevchenko last March, are sponsored by the UNWLA, Branch 116, of Erie. UNWLA, Branch 116 members have been active outside the Erie area as well. Irene Swystun’s 2.5 year tenure as Ohio Region President of UNWLA has been a source of pride among the members of Branch 116. Mrs. Swystun, Branch President, Orysia Dail and members Maria Swonder and Daria McKay were active partici pants in the 22nd Convention of UNWLA held in Detroit this past May. Culminating this years events was a major honor given to members of the Ukrainian Community at the PA State Capitol. For the second year, the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Branch 116, Erie, has been awarded a grant from the Pennsylvania Coun cil on the Arts in support of an Apprenticeships in Tradi tional Arts program, specifically in Ukrainian nyzynka embroidery. The project director and coordinator is Margaret Corapi. Because the first year’s project was successfully completed, the embroidery master Nadia Wolynec, an Edinboro resident, and her apprentices during the past year, Erie area residents Orysia Dail, Mary Lavosky, and Christine Cavarretta, received a cer tificate of appreciation from Lt. Governor Mark S. Singel at the Capitol rotunda in Harrisburg September 24, 1990. The ceremony celebrated the 1989-90 Apprentice ships in Traditional Arts, a joint program of the Penn sylvania Council on the Arts and the Pennsylvania Her itage Affairs Commission (PHAC). Singel chairs the PHAC. The award was widely publicized in local news papers. Prior to the awards ceremony, Mrs. Wolynec, dis played her embroidery works as well as the work of her apprentices at the capitol rotunda, with the assistance of apprentice Orysia Dail and project advisor, Renata B. Wolynec, Professor of Anthropology at Edinboro Uni versity. The display, which was open to the public attracted numerous legislators, including Rep. Jim Merry and Rep. Karl Boyes, who stopped by to offer their congratulations. Although Mrs. Wolynec has been a resident of the United States for over 40 years, she has remained in touch with her Ukrainian culture, by learning and per fecting her skills in the complex and highly variable embroidery styles of each region of Ukraine. Nadia Wolynec has received numerous awards at the highly competitive Waterford, PA Free Fair for her authentic creations as well as creative work based on ancient themes. She has always expressed a willingness to demonstrate her craft as well as exhibit her collec tion. Her collection has been the focus of special exhib its at two museums this past year. She, her apprentices, and the project director were invited to demonstrate nyzynka embroidery at the Erie Art Museum this past April. She was also an invited master artist at the Palmer Museum of Art at the Pennsylvania State University dur ing the nationally known and prestigious Penn State Arts Festival. The demonstrations and exhibits at each museum were part of the Craft and Community exhibi tion sponsored by the State. Completing the year’s activities were several events during the holiday season including creating a Ukrain ian Christmas tree for the Festival of Trees, Chaired by Daria McKay; the St. Nicholas Program of the Ukrainian School, Helen Lucas school director 1990-91 (Marie Giles school director for the 1989-90 school year); and the election of new officers for the year 1991. These are as follows: President, Orysia Dail; Vice-President/Spe- cial Projects, Helen Lucas; Secretary, Mary Swonder; Treasurer, Luba Clark; Archivist/“Shoppe,” Mary Lavo sky; Cultural/Education/Arts, Daria McKay; Organiza tional/Public Relations, Christine Cavarretta and Larissa Shpon; Health and Social Welfare, Larissa Shpon; Hos pitality, Marie Borsi; Auditing Committee; Mary Lavosky (Chairperson), Anna Kosenko, and Irene Swystun. The new officers are already anticipating a rousing celebra tion of the 15th anniversary of UNWLA in Erie during the year 1991. Branch 116 may be small but its energy is limitless. Renata B.
