SMALL BUT DYNAMIC BRANCH 116 IN ERIE, PA CELEBRATES BANNER YEAR OF SUCCESSES It is amazing how a lot of hard work and motivation on the part of a few zealous people can produce spec tacular results. UNWLA Branch 116 of Erie, PA, consist ing of less than 20 members, has had a year of suc cesses which many large branches can admire. Most dramatic of these successes was its participation in the presentation of Ukrainian Heritage Day which was held the first Sunday of June. Several thousand people attended this well publicized event. Local newspapers, radio, and television media generously allocated space for announcements as well as several feature articles and photographs. Erie Mayor Joyce Savocchio proclaimed June 3, 1990 Ukrainian Heritage Day. Numerous dignitaries were in attendance. Mayor Savocchio expressed her admira tion for the sponsors of the event during her greeting to those in attendance and expressed her hope in the con tinuation of ethnic pride in Erie. Pennsylvania Governor Casey and Lt. Governor Singel sent greetings through their representative Amy Skillman, Director of the PA Heritage Affairs Commission’s State Folklife Program. Numerous other state senators and representatives joined the festivities. The White House telephoned its regrets that President Bush would be unable to attend because of his summit meeting Soviet leader Gorba chev. Irene Swystun, President of the UNWLA Ohio Region lent her support and hard work to the festivities. Dr. Alexander Kosenko served as Master of Ceremonies. Throughout the day there were craft demonstra tions by Ukrainian arts and crafts specialists. Local artists included Anna Kosenko performing on the bandura and the Ukrainian Dance group of Erie. The latter, is a children’s dance ensemble which has become known locally during the past 12 years for its perfor mances at numerous community events. Of course booths offered tasty morsels and children’s games occurred throughout the day. Ukrainian Heritage Day was an opportunity for everyone to reaffirm their pride in their cultural roots. People who remembered only a grandmother’s embroidered shirt as their tenuous con nection with their ethnic past proudly discovered the richness of their heritage.
