UKRAINIAN WOMEN IN RUKH! (T h o u g h ts a n d e x c e rp ts fro m a p riv a te in te rv ie w w ith Evhen Sverstiuk. Q: Please tell us something about women’s participation in Ukrainian Rukh? A: Women have the same roles in Rukh as in their lives; they are shadowbox leaders. Our famous het’mans were sometimes managed by their wives. Overall, the Ukrain ian women was a far more impressive figure than his tory gives her credit for. History only sees the ones in the forefront. We can’t say that here a woman plays a minor role. Because of the socialist environment, she is enslaved and terribly oppressed by life. Although she is the anchor for her family, and her children she still brings home a salary from her work outside. Aside from all that she also makes a place for herself in the com munity. I know women who are very active in Rukh, not loudly active, but they have an enormous influence on their colleagues. The first, probably is Laryssa Skoryk, prof. of esthetics at the Kiev Institute of Art. She was already a notable figure when all others were still silent and wished to remain in the background. The authori ties wanted to fire her from her job, yet she never deviated from her convictions. She was so to speak an official dissident. Perhaps she was saved because of her husband, famous composer Skoryk. Laryssa Skoryk is a tireless individual who sleeps only three hours a night. She is always on the move. She is a very cultured per son. In Rukh, she is in charge of ethics. Her presenta tion is always interesting, she is precise, quick and to the point. At times men lack such a lucidity and clarity with which women judge people, things and events. Sometimes people ponder at lenght on the creative work of Oles Berdnyk, yet Laryssa Skoryk, in three sentences, presents the essence. I remember an evening in honor of Borys Dmytro- vych Antonenko Davydovych. Men made their presenta tions. Then the podium was given to Laryssa Skoryk. In my opinion one should have attended this event only to hear her speak. She spoke briefly about an atmosphere in which honest people were feared, as the clean and washed fear the chimney sweeps. Borys Dmytrovych was an open individual who did not hide the truth of his past. He was fiercely persecuted and avoided by many people. Laryssa Skoryk visited him as did other brave women, true peace seekers. During her speech she touched upon this turncoat atmosphere, about coward ice, which even today attempts to explain itself. She belongs to a group of people for whom there are no excusable reasons or circumstances for not being hon est. All in all she is an immensely interesting individual, a perfectionist, very cultured and principled. Branch 90 in Philadelphia during their m eeting with Evhen Sverstiuk. teacher from Uman, Tanya Chornomaz. She has two children, but has little time for her family. She wakes up Uman. Everything surrounding her comes alive. She is very energetic and fearless. She is part of that group about whom little is known, but a lot depends on them. If anyone says that there are few women in Rukh, its because only the more famous ones are always in the limelight. However, many of those in the background are known in their neighborhoods, in villages, those who do all the work. In the Society for the Preservation of the Ukrainian Language and during special events where I was asked to speak, women play a big role. Men appear more in an official capacity. I cannot imagine what the noisy little town of Brovay would be without a teacher, Maria Odvienko.... The concrete aspects of any undertaking are usually handled by women. Q: Tell us about others. A: If I start to speak about Nina Matvienko, then I will not speak about others. In the 1970’s when all was quiet, Nina Matvienko sang and spoke for us all. But then, she is a remarkable individual. I will tell you about Halyna Antoniuk. She is a shy, unobstrusive individual. Her former husband is the noted dissident Zinovij Antoniuk. Her son Panas is active in Rukh. She is Rukh’s informa tion bureau. She is always there, will tell you everything and only the truth. She is trusted by all, no one suspects her, neihter the left, nor the right. There is a woman, perhaps known to you through the press — Lida Orel. She is the wife of noted com poser Leopold Jazcszenko. He always seems young, perhaps due to his wife’s support.
