No one’s Mother is a ‘typical’ mother. Everyone has a mother who is an exquisitely exclusive personality, a veritable madonna. However, in a broad sense, can we enjoy assuming an idea that there is a ‘typical Ukrainian mother’ whom we cherish? What are some of the quali ties she possesses? Is there a thread of similarity, a thread of continuity or consonance in all Ukrainian mothers? Can we dispassionately describe a quintes sential Ukrainian Mother? Here are some thoughts at random as generated by a few of my friends. A U k ra in ia n M o the r... is tru e to h e r H o m e la n d , h e r roots. The previous Convention adopted a resolution in this matter, and the XXII Convention should strenghten it. The World Congress of Free Ukrainians declared the 1990’s the Decade of the Ukrainian Language. Our cooperation with American wom en’s organi zations, as well as our membership in Ukrainian organizations of world stature — WCFU and W FUW O — it satisfactory and should be continued, since these are our “window on the world.” However, it is necessary to note that such cooperation and repres entation requires serious financial resources. To insure the continuation of these activies, it is neces sary for the Convention to provide for a Representa tional Fund. The Ukrainian Museum is the pride of our organ ization and will be given special attention at the Con vention, which should adopt the necessary resolu tions insuring the institution’s continued growth and progress. The Convention should devote a good deal of attention to OUR LIFE magazine. We are all aware of the fact that this is the only Ukrainian wom en’s mag azine in the free world, which has been published monthly for 46 years. The Convention resolutions must secure its future. The work of the W elfare and Scholarship Chairs and Committees is fam iliar to all from the favorable results which have been achieved. The Convention should duly appraise this work and insure that it extends to Ukraine. The Education Com mittee Chair has initiated the founding of day care centers, an act which the Con vention should support with an independent resolu tion. The financial reconstruction of UNW LA has con tinued for 18 years and a lot of im provem ent is in evidence, however, there are still many areas which need attention. The XXII Convention must have this very important matter on its agenda. From the perspective of many years of activity in the Executive Branch of UNW LA — 14 years as Secretary, the last three as President of the organiza tion. I can see great strides in improvement. I am glad that various misunderstandings were resolved. I am glad that Regional Council conferences and inter-regional meetings are conducted on a higher level, I am happy that we have newly formed branches and I extend greetings to new members of UNW LA. I am also very pleased that many of the resolutions of the XXI Convention have been put into practice. The delegates to the XXII Convention will receive the final reports of the Executive Board members and of the various Chairs of the organization. These reports should be carefully read in order to become fam iliar with the work performed by the elected members of the National Board. The delegates should participate in the constructive discussions and in doing so, keep in mind the welfare of the organization. We all hope that the XXII Convention will be successful, that sound resoning predominates rather than emotions in planning the agenda for the future years.
