its lack is reflected in all aspects of culture. This is a very poignant remark, which brought to mind the art of Cho- lodny. The Stalin/Bresznev subculture tore a huge hole in Ukrainian culture, with nothing to fill it with if it was not for the work of such artists as Petro Cholodny, father and son, their colleagues and those that followed them. The works of Petro Cholodny (the Younger) are scat tered all over the world and today no one has compiled a monograph about his extensive creativity. His most repre sentative works should be collected and the collection duly published. This would be one of the most beautiful gifts which Ukrainian in diaspora can give to the renewing cul ture of Ukraine. An artist of great expertise, unique, wise, knowledeable in tradition, and at the same time contme- porary in the spirit of his creativity, Cholodny bequeathed to us a true classical body of religious art. The artist has gone, but his art will continue to enchant all who can appreciate the true achievements of a mature artist. May his memory live forever! (This speech was delivered during the funeral of the artist in Bound Brook, NJ on January 30, 1990 by Sviatoslav Hordynskyj.) (translated from Ukrainian) THE UKRAINIAN MUSEUM As a result of the current situation in Ukraine and the easing of travel restrictions, the Ukrainian Museum has been presented with a wealth of opportunities in terms of acquiring objects for its collections. Many peo ple coming to New York City from Ukraine bring objects of fine art, or beautiful folk art items which they want to sell quickly. Many of these items, particularly textiles are parts of Ukrainian folk costumes, exquisite and magnificent, where the embroidery or the weave makes it a one of a kind item. Without doubt, such objects make a truly worthwhile and much desired addition to the Museum’s collection. Plainly speaking, people who bring these objects to the Museum for sale want to make a deal within a short span of time as well as receive their payment. At best, the Museum in many cases has two or three days to make a decision and come up with the funds to cover the purchase. The Ukrainian Museum does not have a base fund from which it can draw at random to secure a purchase whenever the opportunity arises or on short notice. However, the Museum cannot afford to bypass the numerous buying opportunities which knock on its door. There were times that with great regret and sadness objects were returned to the seller for lack of funds to purchase them. This is a loss not only to the Museum but to the entire Ukrainian community. In its 14th year of operation, the Ukrainian Museum Петро Холодний. Краєвид. Petro Cholodny. Landscape — A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE is a vibrant institution, with a well developed exhibition agenda — traveling and inhouse, popular educational programs, cultural activities, research and publications and with growing support from Ukrainian American communities throughout the United States. The Muse um’s goal and purpse is to collect examples of Ukrain ian cultural heritage, share them with its viewing public and preserve it for future generations. There are many ways to support the Ukrainian Museum. Giving funds toward the purchase of objects to the collections is one very important way. "Threads to the past” is a one hour video documen tary on the history and uses of Eastern European embroidery, which is in the production stage by WSKG Public Television and Radio in Binghampton, NY. Lubow Wolynetz, the Ukrainian Museum’s Curator of the Eth nographic collection is a consultant to the project, as well as one of the individuals who will appear on the program. In an interview taped on film at the Museum in February, Mrs. Wolynetz responded to questions about Ukrainian embroidery and its place within the scope of Ukrainian folk art heritage. She elaborated on the tradi tional uses of embroidery, its practical applications and related the customs associated with it. In the Spring of 1987 the Roberson Center of the Arts and Sciences in Binghampton, NY presented a very interesting exhibition GODDESSES AND THEIR OFF SPRING, which showed symbols of the ancient goddess ’’НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 1990 19
