The laws of nature are harsh — man must wrest from nature the time for his own existence and manifest himself in actions which will continue to live in future generations. This becomes the singular responsibility of the artist or the poet to himself and to his contemporaries, if he is able to instill in these works the essence of his time and create concepts which would fill the imaginations and souls of those yet to come. This is one of the fundamental prob lems of each culture which aspires to permanency and the preservation of it continuity into the future. In this aspect the creativity of Petro Cholodny is in the center of the key problems of our era. In the beginning of the century, its first decade saw the rise of creative talents which were able to project ahead. They were Alexander Archypenko and Mychajlo Bojchuk. The first followed the path of a total modernization of form, the second followed the path of the rebirth of our century old traditions. The political conditions in Ukraine and the actual war against religious traditions would not allow Bojchuk to fully realize his potential along those lines. Petro Cholodny — (the Elder) began to develop similar ideas, his own, and enriched the Ukrainian icon with the wealth of impression ist colorations. His son, Petro Choldny (the Younger) went even further — he fused tradition with the most recent styles of our time. He was not alone here, four other artists worked in this category, yet in the summation of his crea tive mastery Cholodny conceived his own school of art. In it the most important to us are his own works, especially the icons for iconostasis, paintings on walls, mosaics, stained glass paintings, etc. In subject matter and in style they are totally in the spirit of tradition, yet they emit an Петро Холодний. Perhaps I am not mistaken when I say that it is in this category — religious art— that the artists of diaspora created their most striking works. In these works the aes thetic sense and cultural standards of the Ukrainian society are obvious, evidence of the desire and demand for such works from its artists. As in the days of the renaissance, an artist became the interpreter of the aesthetic demands of the population. The contemporary artists of Ukraine would like to achieve this status. I would like to recall one fact concerning the meaning of religious art. In the fall of last year, Opanas Zalyvacha, one of the leading contemporary artists of Ukraine had an exhibition of his paintings in Ivano-Frankivsk. At the open ing he spoke (as recorded on video) about the fact that in Ukraine today the people have lost their aesthetic sense and sense of harmony, which is the basis of art. In earlier days, he said, people were able to see art every week in churches, and now that this practice is almost nonexistant, Петро Холодний. Ж ук Petro Cholodny.
