NOW THEY MAY REST IN PEACE. Світлини із похоронів Василя Стуса, Юрія Литвина та Олек си Тихого в Києві 19 листопада 1989 р. Photographs from the funeral of Wasyi Stus, Jurij Lytvyn and Olek- sa Tychij, in Kiev, November 19, 1989. On November 19,1989 more than 30,000 Ukrainians joined in somber funeral ceremonies in Kiev to honor the memory of Wasyl Stus, Jurij Lytvyn and Oleksa Tychij. The longtime intervention of their families and many Ukrainians organizations culminated in permis sion to bring the remains of the three warriors for the freedom of Ukraine to be laid in the bosom of their beloved land. Officiating at the ceremonies were clergy from the Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Wasyl Stus was born in 1938 in the village of Rach- Cont. US CALLS... their gender, as a rule, those confronting women in developing countries are often a matter of life and death. The problems of women in developed countries should not be ignored, but, in an era of scarce UN resources, the CSW (Commission on the Status of Women) should concentrate on the most serious and pressing problems facing the largest number of women and address those problems in a meaningful way. The impact of the global economic situation has common manifestations. While addressing regional and national concerns we must not lose sight of the global commonality of issues facing women such as the in creasing number of women in poverty, and the ever- increasing number of households headed solely by women. As women comprise over half of the world’s popula tion and perform two-thirds of the world’s work, my government believes that is essential to include women’s nivka, in the Vinnytsia region of Ukraine. His studies led him to become a teacher, a journalist, a writer. And then, many year of Gulag. In September 1985 he died, imprisoned. The tragic fate of Wasyl Stus mirrors in many ways the fate of his spiritual teacher Taras Shevchenko. Both died on foreign soil when both were 47 years old. The legacy of both is their unfailing love of their homeland and their people. issues in the discussion of economic development throughout the US system. All concerned delegations must go to Vienna pre pared to encounter head-on those problems that deni grate the lives of women. We should set aside issues that divide us. We can argue our countries’ political views in other forms. We must let the Commission on the Status of Women concentrate on the fundamental needs of women. Mr. Chairman, my delegation encour ages the CSW to focus its attention on practical solu tions to problems facing women. Solving the problems of drug abuse and its impact on women and their fami lies, female illiteracy, inadequate health care, violence against women, and women’s limited access to eco nomic markets are all necessary in order to achieve women’s full participation in the political and economic life and the development of our respective countries. At the CSW, there should be a constant dialogue
