OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. XLVII FEBRUARY 1990 Editor: Marta Baczynsky A HOLIDAY ON THE STREETS OF LVIV (from what was seen and heard) Until that day there was no winter in Lviv; it was not there on New Year’s, nor on Christmas, not even on the Feast of Epiphany. Days dawned bright and sunny and if it rained, it did not last long. Streets dried quickly, and as quickly were filled with mobs of noisy people. Lviv was having a good time. The city was having such a good time as rarely before, perhaps never before. The national holidays “Christmas in Lviv” which was announced through radio, printed media and television, on St. Nicholas’ day, December 19th, were a success. Carolers marched through the streets, sang in houses, in clubs, on stages of concert halls, in parks or city squares. “Vertep” scenes were staged everywhere — in schools, in any open places, in theaters. Young people of Lviv played instruments and sang; carolers from the suburbs came to town in Свята на вулицях Львова. Celebration on the streets of Lviv. special busess to perform and “show off”; on one corner of the street the bases solemly started a carol Boh Predvichnyj” while on the other corner one could here the bell-like children’s voices continuing the ancient carol. On Christmas Day, when the judging for the best “Vertep” was at hand, one could see multiple Judas. The gold and silver crowns of kings and tzars who came to greet the Child, glistened and gleamed; dev ils and their kids teased the pedestrians on the streets and angels flapped their white wings. The festivities reached their pinnacle on the Feast of Epiphany, January 19th, when thousands of people filled the large place in front of city hall, where as in the old days the ceremony of the blessing of the water was officiated by clergy of all faiths.
