here; authentic costumes and songs create a very warm and personal atmosphere. Both plays, Snow in Florence and Proshcha are often performed together in one evening. For the young actors who perform in these plays and who have left the relatively quiet life of the stage of the national theater, this is a dedication to the truism of the arts. The Lviv Youth Theater was founded in 1988 as an experimental theater by a group of young actors headed by Volodymyr Kychynsky, a student of the noted direc tor Anatolij Vasilev. The group decided to form an inde pendent theater where the creative process would be channeled toward developing to the fullest the potential of each individual member. This theater thus approached in similarity the Ukrainian theater of the 1920’s and 1930’s under the tutelage of the remarkable Ukrainian director Les Kurbas. This was a system within which there were acting, directing and theater studies studios. Such an organization allows everyone to work with max imum dedication and not only develop one’s talent, but continually improve upon it. The underlying essence of the Youth Theater is to continually seek new creative aspects — new plays, new ways to stage the old ones. Two very different plays exemplify the enormous range of capability and interest of the Theater. There is Lina Kostenko’s The Orchard of Tenuous Sculptures, and O. Djuma’s The Court of Henry III. Both plays gave the actors enormous opportunity to display the wealth of their talent. Within half a year the Theater presented The Law by Volodymyr Vynnychenko, where the action was directed to the presentation of inner psychological feel ings and emotions. Using very limited physical props, actors T. Kaspruk, O. Dracz, P. Mykytiuk and H. Polo- vynka were able to dwell deeply into the moral and phi losophical world of Vynnychenko. The Theater is cur rently preparing a new production of his play Between Two Strengths. One of the important features of the Youth Theater is its ability to deal with poetic works. The composition dedicated to the struggles and creativity of Vasyl Stus was not only an artistic event, but a protest against the silencing of his voice. The tragic fate of the poet, who died in a Bresznev exile camp, became a symbol of great manliness for the young actors. That in turn, brought down the pressures from the bureaucratic ma chine. But the theatrical group defended their right to this particular program in their repertoire and defended their right to speak. In addition to contemporary Ukrainian poetry, the Theater presents compositions based on the works of B. I. Antonych and Taras Shevchenko. They also have in their repertoire the poetry from the struggle for inde pendence era which was removed from the history annals of Soviet Ukraine for over fifty years. Although the plays already mentioned were staged by the artistic manager of the Theater, other directors made their presentations as well; The Last Night of So crates by S. Caniev, directed by A. Rotenstein, and The Magic Glove, directed by an actor in the theater Andrij Tymchshyn. In a short while Lviv’s theater goers will see the premier of On the Field of Blood, and Johanna, the Wife of Chusov, in a production of V. Kuchynsky. The plays are based on the works of Lesia Ukrainka. Hence, in Lviv we now have a living theater which shows good taste in its repertoire, exhibits intelligence and artistry in productions and adheres to high profes sional standards. But most important it remains stead fast in its adherence to its principles. Thus, the Theater embraces not only its supporter, but in general the crea tive population of Lviv. Youth Theater makes all young. We are not talking about age here in the chronological sense. It was writ ten, “Let us not take this lightly, in the theater we seek the elexir of youth!” XXII КОНКУРС СФУЖО ім.
