Vorotar — an ornamental design used only on the ends of the egg and connected by lines. Vorota means gates and these gates opened in the spring and summer and closed in the fall and winter. In the life of a person they signified birth, life, marriage and death. Szuchok-shum— signified the lively atmosphere of spring, nature’s happiness. (Szuk is a beetle). Vino-vinochky — symbolize the beauty and integ rity of a young woman. Three wreaths around the egg depict three stages of life: birth, marriage and life itself. Ptach (bird) — the symbol of happiness and mys tery. Such a pysanka keeps evil away. Birds on eggs may be represented in various ways, sometimes only the wings are depicted, at times an eye or beak. Kola-obruchky (rings) — symbolize eternity, peace and prosperity. Pojasy (belts) — 9 belts of different color on one of the egg was the symbol of the sun, on the other end the stars and moon. An egg decorated in this fashion warded off all disease, deamons and deception. Lines in the center of the egg signified wealth and a happy marriage. Nebo (sky) sun, moon and stars — this was a sup plication to these heavenly bodies to bring good weather, particularly to the traveler. Chresty (crosses) — symbols of the earth. Trojachok (triangle) — symbol of the power that rules the earth, the heavens and the sea, brings happi ness and defeats of evil, gives widsom, helps sailors, and is the source of successes and youth. Flora — cucumbers, peas, apples, pears, cherries, symbolize growth and fruitful harvest. Flowering orna ments such as the tree of life, branches or pine branches in the Hutzul region, symbolize youth and eternal life. Stalks of grain — hope for a fruitful harvest. Bees — asking for nature for larger, more produc tive hives; also purity of spirit. Animals — cows, horses, sheep, deer, fish or animal horns, bird’s feet, rabbit’s ears, wolve’s eyes, symbolize dedication, spiritual values, physical strenght and the wish to have a strong herd.
